Telkom's broadband 'laughable'

Lindsay Barnes said:
Telkom has a monopoly in the supply of ADSL services and it provides a weak service compared to international standards, he said.

"All the other services, such as Sentech's MyWireless, really only resell the product."

Huh ?

A reference to the fact that whatever your internet service in SA, the ultimate provider is Telkomonopoly.

Thanks, GateCrasher.

the speed of connection has improved and reliability is now on a par with international standards

On par with international standards ? :P

Hi Celemasiko

I am finding myself in an undesirable position…I have to agree with this statement and therefore with Telkom :D

The reliability of ADSL is close to 100% and is on par with international offerings. This was evident from our data in the ratings report. The average speed of ADSL has also improved (since the complaint in 2004). Having said this, it does not have a significant impact on our ICASA complaint. Telkom should be commended for improving ADSL’s speed and reliability, but there are so many other issues that I am not certain how I will fit them all in in my 40 minute discussion :D

Good morning RPM,

despite my numerous complaints, they were not able to fix my ADSL in my area.

Promoting urbans and forgetting rurals, thats not the way it should be.

As soon its start raining my connection drops. My speed is fare behind of what you consider to be reasonable. And I am not the only one with this complaints all around KZN.

They might have improuved in urban areas, but as soon you go out of the big cities you will find the real bush-DSL.....with all its shortfalls.

Thats why I am considering DSL has NOT improuved. I was one of the first subscriber in 2003 for ADSL in my area but all what I have expierienced were helpless looking technicians, but all with the same answer. "You have to be patient, its still a new service"

btw. I consider 512/256 speed as a faster ISDN, but not as broadband...**ggg*

Sorry, I forgot. I came in 2003 from Germany and I have expierienced international standards, of which SA is still far behind. (I can only speak for KZN)

I beg to differ as well. It shoudl rather read that Telkom service etc has improved to levels acceptable at the time of roll-out. Since then there were many technological advances of which none were made available to users.

Since the roll-out of Telkom, the international tendency was to reduce cost to consumer, or increase speeds, or both. Telkom has again failed to follow these trends. The minor price decrease announced recently is a drop in th bucket compared to the decreases announced elsewhere.

If price reductions is an indicator of the efficiencies of the various operator, it is obvious that Telkom is a most inefficient monster that should be reigned in.

You got 40 minutes???!!!!

Well there will of course be those who experience good and those who experience bad.. one would need to survery each user of each connection to establish wether or not they are in fact receiving decent service.

From the ADSL lines ive used its looked very good.. not worth the R900 by any means or even half that, but I would probably be hard pressed to not fork out R250/mo for the 512.
