Could I ask the community's assistance in compiling a list of local distributors of WiMax (compatible) / OFDM related products. So far I've only managed to locate:

www.grintektelecom.co.za (http://www.grintektelecom.co.za)
www.michelangelotech.com (http://www.michelangelotech.com)

Actual products being shipped and in use at this moment:
Distance 80km LOS, latency 1ms (good for gaming and VOIP). Uses the
license free 5.8ghz band, no hassels from Icasa.
Would somebody please find out the cost.

5.8GHz is regulated in SA AFAIK. Only 2.4GHz is unregulated.

Last time I heard was that Telkom was using Alvarion products. Should look for local Alvarion distributors

Alvarion (http://www.alvarion.com) is distributed by Grintek (http://www.grintek.co.za)
NextNet (http://www.nextnetwireless.com) and Redline (http://www.redlinecommunications.com) is distributed by Michelangelo Tech (http://www.michelangelotech.com)

Nope, 5.8GHz is unregulated aswell.

Thats what I meant by WiMAX (compatible), but I guess pre-WiMAX is a better term.

Redline Communications has opened a South African office and has a channel in operation. Their RedMAX product is available locally.

First formal WiMAX certification announcement from the WiMAX Forum is due out on January 16th. The first WiMAX Certified equipment is all TDD, and includes Redline, Aperto and either Proxim or Exxcelera - not Alvarion as they are FDD and not in the Cetecom labs in Spain.

Axxcelera - with an A :-)

For what its worth - they are doing TDD and FDD. I know they did take part in the plugfest and was of the more 'compatible' to all tests than most of the others.

Problem though - 3.5GHz only at the moment .... I doubt any of the current 3.5GHz holders in SA will deploy now.

WaveIP basestation - R12000
CPE or modem - R6000
30 modems / basestation
Distance 30km at 1meg/modem
Protocol is 802.16

So there you have it. Wimax can be deployed in SA.
Wonder what will Icasa do to a 5.8ghz Wimax basestation?

CPE or modem - R6000

so it costs R6000 per modem O.o ???

It would be cheaper to get a sat inet from uk...

The WaveIP 5.8GHz outdoor CPE or SU (subscriber unit) is now also avaiable in a smaller unit excluding antenna for about R4700 - and cheaper if quantities are odered or R4900 for a similar unit with integrated 23dbi antenna.

Please be aware the Alvarion equipment is NOT WiMAX as they hase not had their equipment certified. Only some TDD vendors like Redline Communications have WiMAX certification.

The whole WiMax certification thing is a cock up anyways ....
It wont be until 2007 / 2008 until FULL compatability is seen - thats best case. No one is currently rolling out WiMax networks. Pre WiMax has bit some operators in the ass.

Even once ratified, 802.16e has no techological 'silver bullet' that makes it vastly superior to any other (even proprietary) broadband wireless technology avaliable now or in the future.

WiMAX's true value lies in it being a globally accepted & widely shipped standard. Just like WiFi, WiMAX will only truely 'happen' if & when it is incorporated into some future Intel Centrino spec. and when this spec/chipset is shipping in any noticable volume worldwide.

Only once a certain critcal mass point is achieved, where a sizeble enough number of CPE devices are in circulation, will the network providers be incentivised to roll out 'wide converage' WiMAX networks. But Intel & co. better hurry up as there going to have stiff competition from the cellular providers who will probably be rolling out 2nd gen HSDPA technology during the same timeframe.

Going to be interesting to see who gets it right.

Agree. Its currently a stand off between large WISP's and Intel. Their chipset is worthless if ISPs do not deploy base stations that support these chipsets.

You then have to look at frequencies, what has been ratified, what is available in which countries, blah blah. Many operators in Europe are rolling out WiMax (Pre WiMax thus far) in 3.5GHz ... perhaps there the Centrino type replacement would cater for 3.5GHz, then again, what about the 2.4 / 5.8GHz WiMax plans? Perhaps chips that support two or more frequencies are possible ..... its a time/money thing. I cant see it becoming as 'standard' as 802.11b has become.
