From a new user intending to get into broadband :-

I would like to hear from you folk about experiences etc on which way to go.
The primary use of the connection is intended to be telephony-related ...
... improved band-width, probably wanting always-on and then to use
two VOIP and POTS combination phones over the same link.

You guessed it ... a home office with two users and I want to know
whether I'll be able to use the same connection at night ...
... to finally get into online gaming. :p

What should it be ... ADSL, ISDN, iBurst etc ?

Thanking you for your time.
Meths.

dont go iburst for one

depending if you wanna games overseas or local.
but isdn is good for international gaming
adsl is awesome for local

with your two pc's all you do is network so that they both use one connection
but i repeat do not go with iburst gaming is really bad

I play on SAIX games server, so a SIAX connected provider is my only option. BF1942 gets lag of 12-25 ms using AYCE (30GB Cap - 1 Year one sided contract). I'm loving it - so far. International stuff seems ok, but not game'able. Local VIOP is good. Have downloaded from MS.com at about 40, and had decent voice conversations with a mate at the same time. But MS is a verrry high-bandwidth website, so its not a true reflection. Cost for my setup P/M = 600 + 480 = 1080 a MONTH. Ouch !!!!!

More info on AYCE =

If you are going to game, get ADSL. It is by far the best choice for gaming

not if your gonna play on international servers

stoke why not download grade to 384 not much difference.

i think that ayce contract i signed is amazing hey stoke?
the pings on the local bf 1942 are same as mweb but int pings always gonna be bad

I'm going to hold on the downgrade for now. Last time I downgraded (Last year Aug (Saving for holiday)), just before I cancelled, it went realllllly bad. Busy starting up another damn online business (- take 6 - keep on trying -), so, once it's stable, i'll get another line and then use that line 4 the company, and then drop to 384.

But yip - still smiling over AYCE !!!!! :) :)

It seems Telkom has blocked IS ADSL users from using games.saix.net. Any suggestions to use other alternatives:

Hello again.

Lowrider :
If this is recent occurence, it may be a temporary outage.
At at work (Nedcor) and cannot get to the telkom.co.za hompepage either.
(It went down about two hours ago ... so assume it may be a localised problem. )

All:
I'm enjoying the insight and comments, thanx, guys ;-))

AYCE, at the moment seems to be the most cost-effective solution because of its lower price but watch this space - Imaginet are soon going to be releasing higher caps and are more trustworthy imo than AYCE.

IS has switched over to their satellite network and aren't using the SAT3/SAIX exchange, saw my ping times dramatically increase after the switch over but the browsing in very speedy. Got a 3GB unshapped account from saol and now they hover around 500 on international servers.

Guys pinging SGS in dos wont work from any isp, not even from SAIX adsl... as they block ICMP packets to the SGS network.... If you really wanna test it from ISADSL, test it with a game.

Meth - druid - where in the world do you want to play, and what do you want to play?

FPS. BF, HLCS, UT and the like.

I'm happy to play locally only, understanding that it's kinda harsh trying that internationally. Fortunately there seems to be reasonable support if you go to SAIX using ADSL.

Still, one of my lines got taken out (lightning again) over the weekend.
That's one reason why I'm wanting to go wireless.
From these forums, however, it appears that this is a no-go for FPS gaming.

BTW: Any advice on where to go looking around for opinions on the effectiveness of putting up a lightning conductor (One of those massive iron flagpole jobs) . I've already had the house wired with multiple earth spikes, surge protection etc, etc.

Lightning conductor pole thingy - I phoned a thatching company and convinced them to put me through to their supplier. Expect a lot more lightning strikes though - seems to attract the lightning

Somewhere in either this forum or IBurst's forum, IBusretrs were commenting on playing castle wolfenstein (free versio) using IBurst with no problems. Maybee you shouldn't giveup on IBurst just yet....

...shouldn't giveup on IBurst just yet ...

I'm certainly not going to touch them with the proverbial barge-pole until the current nonsense has been sorted out. ( avoids Sentech V2 ;-)

I guess a lot depends on the bandwidth required by each game.
I'll go hunting around to find those chats, thanx.
