HI MTNBB

can you point us to somewhere that shows the coverage of EDGE on the MTN network?

Are all the main cities covered?

Let us have some more info on this please.

If you have a mtn cell phone and have info display enabled then you can see if a tower is edge enabled if it says "Yello Broadband" - I think at least

The towers do not seem to broadcast the "Yellow Broadband" thing constantly, at least for the one I am using (and I think MTNbb mentioned this somewhere). What I've noticed is that the tower only shows "Yello Broadband" half the time, the other half it shows the location message. Why, I don't know.

And its not because my phone switched to another tower, I can see the channel numbers on my old Nokia, the same channel number sometimes gives me "Yellow Broadband" and other times just "Stellenbosch."

thats all well and good but does not MTN have a coverage map for EDGE. If one travels for example and needs quick access, it would be useful to know if the speed will be there.

MTNBB Coverage map available?

Yes. We do that deliberately. The primary purpose of the cell broadcast is to show the suburb and the use of Y'ello Broadband is an MTN innovation during the coverage rollout.

I agree that a map is needed - as we already have a map for GSM and GPRS. Our plan is to post the EDGE map showing the first rollout phase with proper consolidation and this will be available within a few weeks.

the gsm and gprs maps should be one and the same think IMO. There might be a few BS that are only voice enabled, but I doubt it.

The Cape Town CBD has EDGE and I'll need to check how far along the coast this extends. If you live there then check for the Y'ello Broadband cell broadcast.

Check out the handsets in the Handset thread as our handset expert provides this information - we sell the Nokia 6230 and Nokia 6630 and they both support EDGE.

Table View, behind flamingo vlei, has coverage. Where I am, Sunningdale/Parklands side, there is no coverage.

I know this is a bit SOON and all that

How much longer until EDGE in East London? I see Cape Town is still an issue - am I being a bit of a FORWARD customer? Can we see it this year? Vodacom is planning 3g later this year in EL (according to the consultant I spoke 2). I would much rather not support Vodacom/Telkom...

BTW I am VERY happy with GPRS at this stage - works great with my online DB processing I need to do from time to time, but at the cost, I am a little wary of just going the whole hog and using it for all my browsing, etc. If it were a little cheaper with less annual commitment, I would certainly replace anything else I have with MTN Edge...

I am using it right now to post this - I have an imate (Qtek 2020, etc. etc.) which I have connected via USB to my notebook. I am using it as a GPRS modem. BUT!!! I HAVE SWITCHED OFF WIN XP AUTOMATIC UPDATES, ANTIVIRUS AUTOMATIC UPDATES, ETC ETC... cause this can work out expensive! Also, if I end up with a mass mailing worm that thrashes out 3 gig a day in traffic to an SMTP server somewhere out there... IS EK IN DIE k@k

I wish all the questions were so easy for me :)

I have listed the towns planned for completion by June. The list is a little earlier in this same post and included East London so look out for the Y'ello Broadband on your cell broadcast, and enjoy.

When doing the cost calculations for EDGE remember that if you have taken out an EDGE handset as a normal voice contract upgrade, then you essentially have a broadband data modem in your pocket at no extra cost, so there is a benefit of upfront hardware costs, mobility and convenience. A small business owner (for example) can use the same device at work and home. It makes sense for us to be competitive in the area where we naturally provide the most benefit.
