View Full Version : My folder is no longer a folder

I plugged my flash drive into my computer and it came up with that scan and fix thing, which I clicked. Now three of my folders on my flash are stored as type "File" so I can't access any of the data stored in those folders.

I'm not sure if its due to the scan and fix or a virus from a dodgy computer its been in, but I would like to be able to access the files stored in the folder.

I have run a virus check, and it came up as clean.

Any ideas:confused:

What is your anti-virus called?

And run the trend micro online scanner http://housecall.trendmicro.com/

Its McAffe, I'm using my work computer so I don't have a choice.
I can try again at home on my personal computer.

But is there any other way to view the files?

I have seen a virus that makes exe files that looks like folders even with the same names as your folders. What is the file extension of these files?

Its documents and pdfs, and probably some pictures. It didn't affect all my folders though, just the ones containing documents. Like my "ebooks" folder. The size of the"file" is 90MB, but I'm sure that was the size of the all the documents that were stored in the folder before it became a file

Hmm I've seen the same thing - creates a file with an exe extension within the actual folder, with the name of the folder as the file name. You based in Rosslyn by any chance? ;)

Never use scan and fix, just click continue.

Nope, but I have seen it doing rounds around Pretoria on more than one memory stick.

RP: don't run a virus scan from your local anti virus as it may have been infected too. Run an online scan - I'd recommend the ESET online scanner (http://www.eset.com/onlinescan/).

No virus found, and I use ESET at home, so it would have the same result...
Oh well, lesson learnt. :)
Most stuff I've lost I have elsewhere... haven't accessed those files since I put them on the flash so they can't be too important

You may want to give post #18 a shot here (http://www.thinkdigit.com/forum/showthread.php?t=41818). It looks like quite a bit of effort to me, so if you have the data elsewhere and it's not that important then I'd give it a miss.

Ok the way how you described it, it sounds like you might have been infected by the Brontok worm
