hopefully heaven but probably hell
this morning i decided to try some speed tests before i came to work and i was highly dissappointed. the highest speed i got on an international speed was about 15KB.

local seemed slightly better coming in at 40KB.

whats happening wbs, when will this be fixed so we can start enjoying your service?

same **** different day, checkit dude, call in and ask them when, they'll say tomorrow, i will bet you the farm this issue will NEVER GET RESOLVED

Shaun green can suck my hairy balls

International speed: 79 Kbps
Local speed: 79 Kbps

Signal strength: 5 bright green lights
Area: Parkview
Conclusion: Speed not resolved, but email is

Randburg. 6.1k on Telkom speed test. Disco lights - red led to full signal.

5 lights on modem

International (UK):
running 10s outbound test (client to server) . . . . . 42.30Kb/s
running 10s inbound test (server to client) . . . . . . 23.79kb/s
Correct me if i am wrong, but thats kilobits?

Local: Telkom seems broken :\

International (USA):
Download: 25kb
Upload: 52kb
This one is definitely k-bits.

quote from broadbandreports.com:
This should be close, but less, than your rated (purchased) line speed. If you can get close to 90% of your rated line speed, everything is perfect!

2.5% of rated line speed then would be.........unheard of?

The first iBurst features about number 30 in the list, below a 384k connection.

Unfortunately, my speed test was not even listed there (too slow to comprehend).

Seems like I will be taking the sentech unit on loan to a client back and recommending they make use of a different ISP.

One good thing though, is that I am not getting disconnected as much as i was.

Before you complain here about speeds, just make sure ur not capped, and check the coverage maps to see what speeds ur supposed to get.
Just for quality purposes :)

i agree, but generally i get outstanding speeds and my signal is 100% all the time. it was only at 8 am but i am sure they will come right over time.

I was getting about 1.5Mbits per sec early this morning and my signal is usually 100%, so that is still cool.

hahaha, this is so cool...just imagine...
This is what the local telkom speed test just gave me:

Your line speed is approximately 120000 Kbps or 14705.9 kBytes/sec

A word of caution about international speed tests. Latency from SA is high (200-400ms) anyway, but even higher on wireless (>400ms). Most speed tests are intolerent of high latency as they are expecting latency in the sub 100ms range. This means that packet data can be prematurley timed out and unnecessarily retransmitted. This significantly increases packet errors and reduces transfer speeds. This can happen on ADSL as well, but because wireless has much higher latency, Iburst tests are far more prone to this.

That is why I can download a 10MB international file at 60KB/s single threaded, or 120KB/s multithreaded, yet barely muster 25KB/s on an international speed test.

Comparatively these tests tend to be far more suited to ADSL than wireless.

You don't get this anomoly on the local speed tests (where Iburst is demostratively faster than ADSL) because latency to local sites (<150ms) is not an issue.

Hmmm, sounds like there is some mucking about with a transparent p[r]oxy server somewhere - perhaps upstrean of WBS, i.e. on the UUNET side of things...?

That's actually your harddrive speed. :D You must use the control key and refresh button in conjunction to avoid reading the transfer data from your cache.

nah, I know about the cache thingie - I use Safari on a mac. It's obviously a hiccup, but funny nevertheless! :p

Not to WBS's defense, but something to bear in mind...

Hi Guys,

I attended the ICASA hearings and RPM's presentation today, and a few interesting things were brought to light.

The Tier 1 ISP's (UUNET, IS, MTNNS etc) are all having a torrid time with Telkom and the Peering agreements. Telkom is refusing to come to the party and upgrade and supply more bandwidth, and even with the small uptake in broadband in SA, there seems to be a problem. Heaven forbid we get any real competition and suddenly double our broadband numbers....!

This is not confirmed, but I am sure this fact may be contributing to the Degradtion in Service on Iburst, as UUNet are having the same problems as IS has been having, but Telkom are standing firm.

This is no excuse for the poor communication from WBS, but just another fact to add confusion to the bandwidth problem!

Man so I leave Telkom to get away from them because they are the worst company in the world Period. (ok mabey one or two in Kabul might be worse lol)
Now they still havea say in my Bandwidth and i get the feeling im being shafted by Now Telkom and Iburst, this connection is a joke to be frank/.
Sigh the wonders of living in Africa lol.
