The nationalisation of mines in South Africa is going to happen, ANC Youth League president Julius Malema said on Friday.

"We seek to implement the ANC's Freedom Charter and it says that mineral resources must be owned by the people," Malema told the annual conference of the Black Management Forum at Midrand.

"We want to transfer mines to the ownership of the people because we know that the little money the people will make will be invested in social responsibility."

Malema said in Botswana a mine could only be owned privately with a 49-percent stake, with 51 percent owned by government.

Mining companies in South Africa had been disrespectful as they were not put off if graves were found around a mining site during exploration. They went ahead and mined.

"They don't care if someone is dead," Malema said.

If the people owned the mines, they would know not to tamper with the dead and the spirits.

"Capitalism doesn't know spirits but we know spirits," Malema said.

Turning to the cost of electricity, he said people were paying a lot of money for power which was generated by coal.

"This coal is mined privately -- we buy it, use it to generate electricity and sell it at an abnormal price to the poor people who really own the coal."
 
Sometimes, just sometimes, I wish some natural catastrophe would rid the world of all it's idiots & bad people.
 
He has a point I cant find fault with and thats freaking me out. I need someone to set me straight. If it works in Botswana (and Russia), and their currency is stronger than ours, could it not work here? Assuming the corruption was dealt with?

These are questions, not an opinion.

according to the jerk logic, everything should be FREE!

People own the land -> coal is FREE (what about the labour? electricity? water? who paid?)
government belong to people -> why pay taxes?
people own the resources -> water, electricity etc should be FREE.
people own the air -> why pay tv licence?

Why these idiots are going to strike for just 1% increase? You should work for FREE.

Valid questions. What do you think will happen with the 51% of the profit allocated to the government? I think it will be squandered like peoples tax money. Does the government pay tax on profits they receive?

If we look at the ANC history everything they touch seems to turn to shyt, SAA, Eskom, Transnet etc etc. And then there is the corruption, nepotism etc, this would be another gravy train for them to hop on.

Agreed, but I am under the assumption thats because of croneism and corruption.... which is why Im trying to work out .. how in a Zuma/Malema free government, this wouldnt work. Say Zille was in control?
 
Zille isn't the government. She alone can't stop the vast amount of corruption etc. Malema actually said something half-intelligent, I have to agree, he did raise a few points.

Why do we constantly need to keep this prick in the news? He's an idiot, let's get over it now. Other idiots don't get news coverage.
 
So instead of profits going into board members, investors etc. pockets, the profits will go into ministers et als pockets ..... I don't see the difference tbh except that we will most likely not be entitled to annual income / expenditure reports, P/L statements etc.

Currently half of the income of local mines are in any event going to government in the form of tax. So what's the dif?

Problem is at the moment white people are part of the top management of the mines. And we know what a little racist Malema is judging by his previous speeches.
 
The difference is the piggies at the current trough have gotten too fat and run out of elbow room so they now need a new one to slurp at.

Hopefully they allow enough time for the companies to remove or demolish the infrastructure before turning it over to the masses, for the land to go the same way as the fallow farms.

This "entitlement" attitude is pathetic - why not teach them that hard intelligent work brings rewards, but I guess that just won't swing with the masses.
 
I can only presume that Malema will get a piece of the pie if goverment takes control of mines. He (and his goverment buddies) will probably ride that gravy train till the end of time.

Goverment has enough investments/*control* in our lives. Eskom, telkom etc.. Why must they have MORE? They will plough thru that money like there is no end...

The difference is that if the Government manage the mines we will get no taxes from the mines but instead we will have to use tax money to keep them afloat like all the other parastatals.
