Police shoot at car, killing woman

Members of the Flying Squad had been "looking out" for a hijacked grey Toyota Corolla when they spotted a car fitting the description, Captain Julia Claassen said.

"The police put out their blue lights for the driver to stop, but he didn't, so police fired shots."

A woman passenger died and two other passengers were wounded. The driver was uninjured.

"[The car] fitted the description. The police allegedly tried to stop the car but it didn't stop."

Police didn't have the hijacked vehicle's registration number at the time.

"The Independent Complaints Directorate will investigate a case of murder and two attempted counts."

No arrests had been made.

Welcome to the fruits of 'Shoot now and ask questions later'.
Motorists are warned about the Blue light patrol and now the police shoot at anything. Do the police know what reasonable force is? its not difficult to stop a car without a gun when the police WORK AS A TEAM and not vigilantes.
 
Question is why didn't they shoot out the wheels and then get the people out the car? I imagine the cops' lives were threatened somehow in this case;) I mean why else would our finest feel the need to blast first and ask questions last?
 
Was the "flying squad" vehicle marked?...

This kind of shoot first, assume you're right crap is not on.. esp if you're just trying to stop a vehicle...
 
Why didnt the car stop when ORDERED to by the police?
That in itself is a criminal offence.
All Flying Squad cars are marked.
It is high time the public of this country listen when the police speak and if they order you to obey the law - you comply
 
marine1 : you're assuming these police officers were in a Flying Squad vehicle... the article doesn't clearly say whether they were or not.

And as for obeying the police... I have zero respect for the police(due to their corruption), and if I KNOW i've done nothing wrong I will not pull over for them... I will drive to the nearest police station instead (which is my right)...

Flying sq officers are uniformed officers and their fleet is marked so...
They do not use unmarked cars as they are not detectives.

Well then if they shoot at you then dont be surprised. Dont mean to take it out on you personally but if you are ordered to stop, you stop.
If you dont you are breaking the law

True. I was thinking that as I posted..:D

But if I was signalled to stop by police I don't think I'd do it...there are so many stories of criminals getting hold of police uniforms and blue lights, you just don't know whether the cop trying to pull you over is a legit policeman or not.

If I'm ordered to stop and the have no justification to do so, I don't stop, i drive to the nearest police station, since there is a chance they're NOT police officers, or they're looking for a bribe.

We live in a country with a police force that are as dirty as the criminals they're supposed to stop in my opinion (I know its a generalisation but hey)...

And if they shoot at me, they can expect the full force of all sorts of laws thrown at them....
 
and just as a btw... shooting at a grey toyota corolla... i mean WTF?!?!?! how fscking dense are these cops....

You have no registration for the car you're looking for so you shoot at a random grey toyota corolla.. there must be literally THOUSANDS of them on our roads...
 
I think there is far more to this story, if not and the cops genuinely shot at the car for no reason, then yes throw the book at them.
IMO the law is the law, if the cops pull me over, I stop.
But I agree with you, we live in a messed up country.
The mainly black (call me a racist i could care) cops are pathetic criminals who want bribes.

The rule of law must prevail, but who are the REAL Cops? There are people in police uniforms that are not police, there are squad cars that are not real police men - where is the line drawn.

I can commend the police for Arresting the suspects, but shooting them?! What is this? Drive-By shootings?

As a cop told me after I had a brush in with a robber and a gun 'Dead Men cant talk' and the arrested robber never made it to the police station.

Imagine how many cases the cops can close by shooting random people and allocating them to case numbers.

Technology exists to stop cars in a safe manner, even at that - you dont need technology to conclude a high speed chase. All it takes is training and tactics. Box-in technique, bump-n-shunt etc etc etc.

Besides, follow the car and eventually if the person is driving like he stole it - they will wrap the car around a pole.

If you a criminal, no matter what the circumstances, you will shoot.
If you a police, you should try all methods before you shoot.

So the driver STOP or not it will not make the different. The driver assumed if the car chasing him is a police’s vehicle, that will not shoot, but if criminal’s vehicle, stop or not the result will be the same. If I am the driver I will not stop up until I know the place I stop is safe.

SAPS themselves are already criminals. Normal citizens do not want to stop by ANY police. (SAPS/Metro) They are not patrolling to "save" citizens' lives; they are just taking bribes or killing people.

My personal story: On Sat (yesterday), three armed policemen were using their handguns and rifles try to arrest a man was using fake cards in a store. After the man "talked" to the policemen and handed out "the release fees", the suspect left peacefully in front of all the people who were watching. Will you surprise? Not me. :sick:

Is the new policy to just shoot to kill suspected hijackers when they don't stop when ordered?
