More free electricity for poor South Africans

How can they give away more electricity when they are already complaining that "we" arent paying enough?

Simple, increase the price of electricity for the people who are paying.

I has political push for this, to calm the masses or to add to the "what we provided you with" speech for the next elections.
 
What you guys have to understand is that we live in one of the most unequal society's in the world. We are not like the first world countries we keep comparing ourselves to, there 15% is poor, our 15% is rich. Simply ignoring the poor is harsh, how else can they get electricity, imagine being their shoes! :mad:

This coming from a pro-capitalist as well..

It is fine that I have to pay for them, but how was it decided to push up their allowance?
 
Remember that the "poor" have been getting free electricity for ages now, take a look at any squatter camp and see the netting of electric cables all over the place, none of them legal and paid for. How much have they used and not paid for, oh wait, they paid for it, by being oppressed. Cake and eat it, nice trick if you can swing it.

Living in a squatter camp does constitute you as poor.

Look, I'm well off, I'd rather keep the extra cash that I have earned but the poorer than Average South African? He can have some of it. I just pray my doesn't go to some corrupt arse's pockets.

Agreed, 70kWh let alone 50kWh a month is almost daily consumption for most of us. The best way I see them implementing this is using prepayment meters.
 
Whats the bet all previously disadvantaged will be allowed free electricity.
Even the politicians in their 750i's.

I'd have no problem if the fat cats over at Eksdom took a pay cut to help pay as well. This country is the bastard child of the worst aspects of socialism. The average joe pays for others to get hand outs while the government and their cronies make a killing for themselves by taking a huge cut of our cash. All in the name of helping the poor :rolleyes:
 
How can you support giving more electricity to the poor when the grid is already under strain? Yes it's harsh but if you degrade your working class the economy will suffer and the poor will get nothing anyway. Eskom needs to get it's house in order before offering more and more free electricity when it doesn't have enough capacity to sustain itself or its paying customers.

We need competition yesterday but it's already too late as it would take time to set up. How about the municipalities take some rate monies and re-activate the old power plants for their communities?
 
Yes beacause of 1/10 of South Africans are paying for electricty and the rest have a free ride... without having to worry that it will be cut off...get more people to actually PAY for what they use...
 
I agree help the poor but regulate this.

I dont have problem with them getting power for free but why the hell should I pay 146% more in the next three years. Then Eskom says there is not enough power.

I am sorry but the tax payer is a hand full and we can only be milked for so long then we fall in the "poor" catogory also.

I still suggest that we need to bring in the China law to have one kid per household and before anybody gets on the high horse of culture or human rights. We dont close the gap of the poor we make it larger every year. Even if we do it for one generation it will help every one in this country.

Electricity is too expensive. We have coal, lots of it. ESKOM has R1 billion, they could build a pebble nuke in the Kalahari. ESKOM and municipalities could have not bashed down numerous power stations in the 90s, too.

There are ways around this, but its easier to increase prices. At the end people buy less stuff, more workers get retrenched and there are more poor. Govt must pay out more disability grants too and gets less tax. Solution - increase taxes. Then people buy less, more workers get laid off, less tax is generated and there are even more unemployed and poor and govt can increase taxes again, and so on.

Easy.

I ideally would like 2 for the basic fact that a single tends to get spoilt but if this became law I would not fight it.

Interesting enough a book was written a while ago called "Creed for the third millennium". In it was a very similar concept where everyone was allowed one child and they actually had a lottery where the winner won the right to have a second child. If a person bucked the norm and had a second child in defiance, he was cut off from any form of welfare.
 
It's worrying that Jacob Maroga (presuming he was quoted correctly) does not know the difference between kilowatts and kilowatt-hours ... a constant free supply of 70kW can run many households :-)

Why should he know? It's as if I'm going at 60km in my car. 60km per hour, per minute, per day?

As long as he can say BS and collect a paycheck he's cool for the job.
 
When my electricity bill reaches R2500/month, I might just fall in the category of 'poor' myself :mad:
In fact, come to think of it, this will probably create a whole new wave of poor folks who can't make ends meet :rolleyes:
Whatever the rationale behind the proposed increases may be, they are unrealistically high! and will only serve to fuel inflation which will result in further hardship for all in the long run.
There has to be a better way to keep electricity tariffs reasonable, yet ensure sustainability.
