WARNING: Ellies/Elsat rental

I live in a complex where I am forced to make use of a communal dish. These dishes were installed by Elsat/Ellies. Today my DSTV was cut off by them because I do not have a "cable" rental agreement with them. I have to pay R68 per month to use the cable from my decoder to the dish. I cannot install my own dish or cable. This is unethical ridiculous and frankly daylight robbery. They know full well that everyone is forced to use their old equipment and therefore they charge what they want.

This makes no sense in any universe. How can they do such a thing. Cable costs R3 per meter. So basically every month I pay for 22.67m of cable. In 5 years I would have payed for 1360m of cable. Absolutely ridiculous!!
 
ROFL - thats gotta be a joke?! If there was such a thing, surely it's supposed to come out of the levy.

If I were you, I'd install a dish inside my house, next to a window. Or in the enclosed yard where I can hang my clothes up. Nobody will see it :D

And, if they do, and there is a ruckus, they can do nothing as it's not visible, and it's on your own property.

If it was put in as a rental system by your body corporate, I think you need to redirect your anger at the body corporate. Most systems gets paid for by dividing the cost between the owners of each unit or from the levy that the owners pay, with no extra costs later. Remember, a communal system is not just some extra cable... There is some expensive equipment used.
 
yep it sucks, my complex has this agreement with el-sat too
just got off the fone with them...
i basically wanted to get the easyview where u get the sabc and some other extra for 20 bucks a month, but now add the R285 (which i dont get cos everything is there already??)
and 68 a month subs (which will increase to R72 p/m as march 2010)

i know i justed wanted this for the better signal and R20 a month its not bad
but for R92 a month im thinking twice bout it, (thats bout 3gb from afrihost)

wat other options do i have?
can i install one inside my flat?? we not allowed to have our own without special permission from the body corporate. any ideas???
 
ill see wat i can get from them in the next week
just moved into the plasce and they seem like a hardcore bunch off a-holes
 
Body corp is the only option.
Start at the agm or try to arrange a meeting.
If they a-holes, get a petition and ask other units to sign.

In our complex they had communal dish (did not have to pay rental though), they did not allow installations of own dishes.
We made a fuss (cos a communal dish is crap - always gets blown when lighning.....) and so now they allow us to install our own.

Thats what i did, do now and ask later. But immediately thereafter they circulated a letter that if anyone erects a dish without consent will be penalized.

But i managed to get away with it.
 
do u have a pic of your dish setup?
just trying to figure out if it will work in mine
will a curtain make a difference to the signal??
 
I would just install a dish, really what are they going to do about it? Body Corporates are full of it is all, you live in the complex as well as them, if they want the communal dish thing then they need to sort out the costs and also make sure it is running properly. I would just put a dish up and see what they say...
 
ya but before i moved in they specifically told me know dishes, blah blah blah....
so will go through the house rules and see if i can find any loop holes

maybe i can use the free to air new satelite thing as my excuse??

i guess they can force me to remove it, but then ill lose out on the costs of the dish

How are they going to force you, are they going to push you up the ladder ?

If they take it down then they incur costs, they still have to give it back to you because its your property. Then you put it back up.

They can't even fine you.

Are you an owner or a renter, if you are a renter then don't do this, if you are an owner then do what you like.
