I tried to do something here for SA blackberry users but can't achieved what I wanted to. Started my own support forums/website, if you want the address pm me please. Not sure if mods will allow me to post the address here.

I also got the System Requirements message when trying to download app world. So i checked on the site and this is the requirements. Not much but i have a 8520 and you need a trackball or touch screen for it to work. Damn! hahahaha!

System Requirements
To ensure that your BlackBerry® smartphone will support BlackBerry App World™, it must have the following system requirements:

BlackBerry® Device Software version 4.2 or higher
BlackBerry smartphones with trackballs or SurePress™ touch screen
To use BlackBerry App World, you require a service plan that includes access to the BlackBerry® Browser

There is a thread here somewhere, can't find it now, that shows how to install it - basically a DOS command to install directly to the Berry. I tried this, but the app would start and stay on the "loading" screen. I eventually gave up :(

Righty ho.

I downloaded the file and tried to load via Desktop Manager.
Guess what :)

This application is not compatible with your device and cannot be loaded.

As said I am running one of a few rare versions of 4.6.1.298 on a Curve 8900 (I know this application works on 4.6.1.250 & I was running that at the time as thats when Ushir posted about it working)

Anyways I don't see the big deal on this app since once needs a Paypal account (would be nice if Vodacom can integrate this with your cellular account and any deductions can be made in rands for applications downloaded - if chargeable)

Official RIM documentation is that you must use IE (and its a process similar to a Windows Update where only IE is compatible with the site) and then it checks the OS version and that the device is connected to your computer and loads the app.

Quite simply really since RIM has been using this for their WebDesktopManager which allows a BB user attached to a BES server to resend their service books and do backups and other fancy bla bla.

Fismail, you need to use your phone to access the link. It's an OTA download :)

Once again it does NOT work on 4.6.1.298 (I don't have an issue with it not working hence me dowloading the jad /cod file and trying it via Desktop Manager.

It does work on 4.6.1.238 & 4.6.1.250 for the Curve 8900

There is talk of Vodacom making it work without PayPal where it will debit your Vodacom account / postpaid or prepaid with the cost if the application downloaded if applicable.

http://www.bbhybrids.net/forum/downloads/IMs/AppWorld/AppWorld.jad

Download failed error = 907 Invalid COD

I did get it working by doing the following:

* Download the following Zip File (http://hotfile.com/dl/9713146/2b490f6/appworld_1.1.zip.html)
* Unzip it to your desktop
* Copy the files net_rim_bb_appworld.cod, net_rim_bb_appworld_resource_en.cod and JavaLoader.exe to the following folder depending on your Windows OS:
#In Windows Vista "C:\Users\(Your User)
#In Windows XP "C:\DocumentsandSettings\(Your User)
* Start CMD (Windows Key + R and then type CMD)
* Plug-in your BlackBerry
* Type: javaloader -u load net_rim_bb_appworld_resource_en.cod
once done type next one:
* Type: javaloader -u load net_rim_bb_appworld.cod

Your BlackBerry will then do a reboot and you will be able to access the application which is now installed in your Downloads folder.

The version you will be installing in Version 1.1. You might be prompted to update it the first time you use it. In this scenario you will be notified that there are already certain files installed which are associated with App World and whether you want to replace them - just say yes.

Reboot again and enjoy the Freedom of BB.

Does anybody know anything about listening to podcasts without being charged for the download/streaming? I have set up some podcasts in Viigo and set the app to use BIS only. I assume that I'm not being charged for these audio files being streamed through Viigo?

Is there a better way to search and listen to podcasts? I'd appreciate any info you have. Thanks.

I have also been searchig for one but for the live of me I haven't been lucky yet. Found one or two, one free and one paid for but that doesn't seem to be working. The free one keeps on failing to download but does download through bis.

GPS service is Location ON ..... this is free through BIS right ? (i have forced my TCP/IP as advised on another post) .... thanks for help

I think you need to specify what GPS source to use. If your phone has one, then set the GPS to "internal" or something along those lines.

sorry, newby to BB and received my 8520 on Friday .... is google Maps and BBweather FREE (ie included in contract BIS), if yes, how do I add those applications .... is there a BB browsing for Dummies anywhere ?

The 8520 does not have Internal GPS but it will work via Bluetooth connection to a GPS receiver which supports Bluetooth and needs to be paired first.

Now at least someone else will also be aware that the 8520 does not have an Internal GPS, but could get it to work with an external Bluetooth GPS receiver :D

I can strongly recommend Amazon's Kindle app for the Blackberry. I've loaded it on my Bold, purchased a book on Kindle for PC, and sent the book to my Bold. It works great. I'm an avid reader and thought I will never be able to read books on the small screen of the Bold, but I was immediately converted. The contrast is great so it is very easy on the eye. Almost done with my first book.

But it doesn't use BIS so you can't do anything else while using it - you don't get e-mails and if you connect to the browser you'll get the MTN/Vodacom browser because it deactivates BIS while it syncs. Very irritating.

Ubertwitter 9.7 is out. Notifications seem to work better now.

A couple of my favourite apps:
BBNotepad: text editor, hooks itself to the "P" shortcut key if you don't use dialling from home screen.
Wallpaper Changer: not free ($3), but damn nice. Changes your wallpaper at specified intervals. I have 250+ wallpapers (http://claidheamhmor.blogspot.com/2010/03/blackberry-wallpapers.html).
Start Me Up: Auto-starts designated apps when the phone boots up.
SmrtGuard: The free version can do stuff like tracking the phone, making emergency calls/SMSes/emails (with location), and alerting you when another SIM is used in the phone.
BuzzMe: disco alert light on phone calls.
AppListing: can save/email a complete list of all your apps.
SMS Backups: emails a copy of every SMS sent/received.

Hi there, I'm a new BB user so please forgive ignorance!

Do you all use the "Documents to Go" as a document editor? I would like to download one or two small Excell spreadsheets to keep handy on my BB and forward to my Recruits when asked for an application form. Will save me a lot of time to do it while on the go rather than wait until I'm in front of my laptop again.
I can't seem to download documents until I pay for the premium "Documents to go"..
any ideas?

oronte
28-04-2010, 05:04 PM
If you're downloading with opera then you're being charged. Opera can't download using BIS, it will redirect to the Blackberry browser. If it's using MTN/Vodacom APN then it can download directly but you will be charged for that. You can only download via the Blackberry browser. And no there are no other 'decent' browsers for Blackberry yet (but the webkit browser coming before September should sort you out)

Found an app worth mentioning Mini Monitor (http://www.ehnert.net/MiniMoni/index.html)

Main features:
Counts the IP traffic on GSM/GPRS/EDGE network in byte.
Scrolling graph to visualize the traffic of the last minutes.
Builds sums on a daily and a time period basis.
The day the period ends in the month is configurable.
A lot of functions can be configured in the preferences in particular to show in bytes or kbytes.
Maintains a daily and a period's logbook. Logbook entries can have user remarks.
You may switch on an alarm once a particular amount of traffic volume is reached in the period.
For devices with SD card the program can write the content of the logbook to SD.
Separate "Traffic watch" to observe the traffic for a limited period of time separately (Testing of an application etc.)
Supported languages are English, German and Italian.
Auto starts on device reboot and installation of new versions.
Tested and proofed to work on different BlackBerry devices.

Changed in version 1.01.03:
Fixed the bug that causes an exception while opening a logbook with more then 100 entries.

Something weird happened to me yesterday: I installed the News24 app and after rebooting, Ubertwitter was no where to be found. Then I re-installed Uber, rebooted, and News24 was missing. Its like they're playing hide and seek. Has anyone had this problem?

Appologies if this is repetitive. Tried to search but couldn't find and can't remember if this was an Android app that I read up about. I want my BB Torch 9800 to connect to my Wifi router at home automatically when I get home and connect back to BIS when I leave home. I thought I read about an app that could do so base on GPS co-ords? Anybody remember such a thing? For BB? For free? Please help....

IIRC this is the default setting as my Torch uses wifi before BIS. Best is to test it yourself.

Really good Blackberry apps are few and far between, but this one is really impressive - FileScout. I've been battling to get any kind of joy out of the severely dysfunctional and limited Dropbox app.

FileScout is a file manager with a Dropbox plug-in that works really well and smooth. Download/upload files, email etc. etc. etc much better functionality than Dropbox.

1. I use accuweather. Only one I found that has a location based weather without u having to tell the phone where u are. U still have to manually click to refresh the location. The weather for that location will update as per specified interval.

2. No ideas, don't use any.

3. On the first page u can download telmap. It isn't bad but struggles to find streets. Ocleroux pointed a few peeps to a vodafone sat nav which I find to b very decent, u just have to adjust the view, as it is turn view by default.
