Doubt it would be so quick. Most likely rim will release to carries then we will have to wait for carries to release.

I'm very tempted to get the v5 firmware that is already available for download. But I rather wait for the official release.

The question is just when will MTN and Vodacom have it available for us to download. That could take another month or two after the release.

Give it a go ! It is really worth it ! The BB performs a lot better with it. If you don't like it, you can always go back.

I personally feel the leaked versions are "official" from rim for the public to test.

If you need help scream. The best place to look for leaked os is http://www.blackberryos.com.

Just downloaded 5.0.0.314 for the Curve 8900.
Doing a Desktop Manager backup.
Will use JL_Cmder to wipe.
Then use loader.exe in program files\common files\research in motion\apploader to load AFTER deleting the vendor.xml file

Typical RIM - they still got this threaded SMS crap.

At least give me the option to turn off the conversations.

On the 4.6 OS versions there is a option to turn "previous items" off so that you don't see old messages from the same contact or number when viewing sms.

Yebo Gogo ....

Nothing wrong with playing on other carriers OS'es at all (aside from support when something breaks)

This probably means that BIS 5 will be done for EMEA in early 2010 as well.

Still in the dark about getting confirmation on exactly WHEN this gets done and a change-log.

Well the os are all the same any way. Carries just customize it for them as they want it and some fiddle with the radio. But it still works on any device as long as its the right os for the right device ! :p

Threaded SMS - *yuck* -> have it but allow one to turn it off as desired and see sms / mms in their normal view -> also called "previous items" in 4.6 OS

Since I restored from Backup and am now doing a wired (usb) EA via Desktop Manager I got Internet Browser , Blackberry Browser , Hotspot Browser , Vodafone Live Browser (since I am using a Vodacom sim in a MTN phone)

Blackberry Maps now has Address Recognition (this is set in Options -> Advanced Options -> Maps)

Accessibility now has Event Sounds (this is set in Options -> Accessibility)

Phone Options now has Enhanced Audio (this is set in Options -> Phone Options -> Enhanced Audio)

Security Options menu layout has changed (this is set / viewable in Options -> Security Options)

Voice Dialling has more options (this is set in Options -> Voice Dialling -> Audio Prompts - this has 3 options viz No Prompts , Basic Prompts , Detailed Prompts) & you also have an option to Adapt the voice (must be done in a quiet room for obvious reasons)

WiFi Options menu has another setting (Options -> WiFi -> Prompt me when manual connection is login is required AS well as Single Profile Scanning)

So in a nutshell until its "tested" on the Vodacom side of things it will be unofficial according to the support staff.

Using BBSAK I already backup my apps. I used DM5.0 to backup my messages and contacts.

After download can I just wipe the device with BBSAK and then after that is completed can I use BBSAK to Load OS?

Will that be all there is to it?

Use BBSAK to wipe the device.
Once done and the device says error 407 (install OS ... or similar) then goto Program Files\Common Files\Research in Motion\Apploader and run Loader.exe and follow the prompts.
Make sure you delete the vendor.xml file before running Loader.exe
Do NOT open Desktop Manager before , during running Loader.exe

All these apps run off Loader.exe anyways but give you a more friendlier interface as to what is happening.

Same story on the 8310 , not so much on the 8100 , same on the 9500 , same on the 8900 (not exclusive to Vodacom) as it happens on MTN as well.

I got the Blackberry service (BES/BIS) on both (1 carrier has less subs and bandwidth and 1 carrier has more subs and should have substantially 10 times more bandwidth and userbase than the other carrier) - debate for another day in the speedtest thread saga.

I can understand the emails not coming in whilst on a call but resuming afterwards but to find your device sans reception is'nt funny.

I have more reliability with my E90 with Blackberry Connect.

true, it's highly annoying, just google it and you'll see that it's not carrier specific though, happens to users all over the world.

Manually delete the vendor.xml file to save yourself the hassle.

So thats 1 major PLUS on my side.

The main MESSAGES folder will contain ALL messages w.r.t emails (unless you combine the MMS/SMS as well instead of seperating them)

Each email account INCLUDING the BES account will now have their own message icon/folder where the messages are displayed whilst as mentioned the MESSAGES folder will contain emails of ALL the accounts on the Berry.

You can also customize which accounts have emailed "delivered" or "viewable" in the main message list (Messages folder)

Its 1 of 2 things.

In my casewhen I did the upgrade to 5.0 I did not resend service books but restored from backup.
Then I turned on the radio.
Then I went to the Setup Options and enabled it FROM the handset BEFORE logging in to Vodacom BIS via my web browser.

Even if I am on BES it "should" work but does not as indicated.

A colleague from NA got his working and sent me his own comparisons.

As far as my knowledge even if you set it up on the phone it will send the service books as well to you. In my experience if you go to the website from your phone, it would open the same page as the email setup pages will do.

"Note: Two-way wireless Contact synchronization with Google Mail Contacts requires BlackBerry® Device Software 5.0 and configuration through email settings on the BlackBerry smart phone. Additional requirements and constraints may be found within the BlackBerry Internet Service 2.8 Documentation Kit. This feature is not supported on BlackBerry smart phones with BlackBerry® Connect™ software."

Is there Afrikaans support (e.g. Afrikaans being selectable when typing e-mails, SMS, etc) on the 5.? versions? This was available in 4.7.0.141, but not 4.7.0.173.

What is the Afrikaans cod been used for.

When installed and you type anywhere you can press alt+enter to switch between afrikaans or other languages to enter txt and check your spelling as well. Only for input and not for normal txt display.

This is where BES would come in for you.

lol our company has a few of them, and about 40 Exchange servers :)

But the BES/BIS service is so slow, unreliable and crappy that its easier to use ActiveSync over the Vodacom "internet" APN. At least I actually get synced.... even if it has cost me $49 *sigh*

Each to his own.

When setup correctly BES is quite nifty.

I generally get BES email 1st on the Berry , 2nd on a wired connection with Outlook and 3rd on a wireless connection on the company lan.

Nevermind the email , the lockdown features are quite useful and has saved us from employee disaster on more than one occasion.

the bugs are creeping out....

My bluetooth doesnt work on the carkit anymore. It connects fine, but sound plays through the phone instead of the kit.

I tried to repair, nothing.

I then tried to delete the Car Kit from the list, and it just goes back to the list without doing anything.

Now I noticed today, I also cannot add any new devices, if i try it says "reconnection in progress, try again later"

and it does that whether BT is on, off, rebooted etc. etc.

Does internet browser work on this os?

assagai

browser works.

The os was fine for about 2 days, now it randomly reboots, sometimes during calls.
I upgraded without the memory card as recommended and then formatted the card afterwards, didn't seem to help.

looks like i'll have to downgrade to 4.6 and wait for a more stable release

random reboots seem to be related to the memory card, took mine out and now it's ok.
Same thing has been reported by a bunch of other people on crackberry

I think that's what happens if you dont remove your memory card form the phone when doing the update.

False alarm. It must be a firmware problem. Some numbers stored on my phone shows the name when I receive a call and some only shows the number. Its a bit annoying.
