Telkom DSl 4Mb connecting at 1280Kbps only!!!!

Please help, or let me know how to ensure they stop scamming.

I upgraded from a 384kbps to a 4Mbps line. I have restarted my modem, Linksys WAG200G and still only connect at 1280kbps.

I have contacted telkom and they said I should restart my modem. Did that, then it connects at 760kbps.

I restart again and I then connect at 1280kbps.

Are there any settings I should change, such as vbr, etc?

Or, is telkom scamming me!!!!!:mad:
 
I'm having the exact same problem as I write!:mad::mad:

There are a lot of threads on this but none of them have been very helpful for me:(
Guess I'll have to phone Telkom tomorrow:sick:
 
what area are you in? I live in Benoni and my sync speed has been up and down like a yoyo the last few days, I think they are still working on the networks in my area

In Midrand. they not working in the area.

I have a pal in telkom so i get my calls logged asap and he communicates directly with call centre staff. he reckons that my line is upgraded to the highest possible on the dslam @ 4096, yet i only f-ing connect at 1280kbps!

You are probably too far from the exchange and that is the highest you can sync at without affecting your connectivity..

A techie should come out and test what the maximum you can sync at is.

Could be a bad line, Get the chums to sort you out with another core on the cable. Also try another modem, one with the function where you could adjust the SNR will help.
 
1) Phone telkom broadband support. Tell the bloke you want to re-verify and he must clear the verification at the exchange. Then check SNR and data rate (before you re-verify) i.e.:

SNR Margin: 6.5 6.0 db
Line Attenuation: 63.5 31.5 db
Data Rate: 3740 256 kbps

There is your data rate the line is capable of. Believe it or not this same line was rated as only 384k capable only two days ago on a cheap Planet router!!

2) Then do your own verification at http://www.telkom.co.za/portal/page

3) Also I have noticed poor international on afrihost, I am not slagging them but I have another account and routing in place for the international sites I want faster access to. Route through afrihost we speed is not important.

10x speed in 15 mins for me, NO call out costs!
 
Here are my stats. Can someone tell me what's the maximum I can sync at:

SNR Margin: Down- 8.0 Up-14.0

Line Attenuation: Down-55.5 Up-28.0

And my data rate is: Down-672 Up-512

im considering upgrading to 4mbps next year....im in the Greenside,Linden,Northcliff area in Jhb? would it be worth it or can i expect to be snaaied like the OP :(
 
A way to "guestimate" the line attenuation is the following:

Less than 1km should be 23-24 Mbit
1.0km = 13.81db = 23Mbit
1.5km = 20.7db = 21Mbit
2.0km = 27.6db = 18Mbit
2.5km = 34.5db = 13Mbit
3.0km = 41.4db = 8Mbit
3.5km = 48.3db = 6Mbit
4.0km = 56db = 4Mbit
4.5km = 62.1db = 3Mbit
5.0km = 69db = 2Mbit

Attainable Rate (ADSL1) – kbit/s 3564
Attainable Rate (ADSL2) – kbit/s 3823
Distance to exchange (Meters) 4019

But keep in mind that those are the ideal figures, and that the noise margin (SNR) will play a big role in your ADSL's sync speed. Your noise margin of 8 is okay, but could be the reason your line is not syncing at its capable rate because it might be fluctuating and nearing 0 pretty often

Is it normal to sync at 4096 on a 4meg line or is that just the maximum possible speed? Because I am getting annoyed now!
