Mossel Bay - A search resumed on Tuesday morning for the last missing fisherman who was on a trawler that capsized in rough seas in Mossel Bay, rescue services said.

"We searched in the low tide during the night but nothing was found. The search is continuing this morning [Tuesday]," said National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) spokesperson Craig Lambinon.

Four of the six crew members' bodies washed up on beaches in Mossel Bay on Monday afternoon.

A fifth man was rescued by a police boat shortly after the trawler, called Mandy, capsized at noon.

Rescue workers were battling swells of almost eight metres and winds of 57 knots (105km/h), conditions in which the vessel capsized at The Point.

"A police boat was in the area at the time. They responded... and rescued one crew member," said Lambinon.

He was taken to hospital in a stable condition and treated for hypothermia.

My sister just sent me an email to inform me that my sister-in-law's brother was one of the fishermen who died :( . My sister-in-law, her mother, and her brother are on their way to Mossel Bay now to go and identify the body..

Johannesburg - The bodies of five fishermen have been pulled from the water while one survived after their trawler capsized at The Point in Mossel Bay, paramedics said on Monday.

ER24 spokesperson Tristan Wadeley said that the rescued man is in a serious but stable condition at Bayview Hospital.

The SA Weather Service warned of very rough seas on Monday between Cape Point and Algoa Bay, with waves exceeding five metres.

I saw the news article on etv yesterday, not even thinking that he could be involved; he was in PE when I heard of him last.
 
Sorry to hear Vern, saw it on the news last night, very sad indeed. The waters looked like hell, dont know how those guys do it, they're a brave bunch.

It is him, confirmed. At least they informed the family before the news article aired - although the news article didn't mention any names anyway.

Tried to call my sister-in-law last night but her phone was off. At this stage, we don't know whether they will be bringing the body back or whether they will just have the funeral service there - apparently he was living there with a woman who is now pregnant with his child; the family don't even know whether he was married to her or not. They also took his 18-year old son with them - to see his dad for the last time I suppose.

Mossel Bay fishermen named

The four fishermen who drowned when their trawler capsized in rough seas in Mossel Bay have been identified, Western Cape police said on Tuesday.

Vinston C Michaels, Christopher Dedericks and Christopher Gerner were from Mossel Bay and Edward Stols from Pacaltsdorp, Captain Malcolm Pojie said in a statement.

Their bodies washed up on beaches in Mossel Bay on Monday afternoon.

A fifth man, Wilhelm Isaacs, who was rescued by a police boat shortly after the Mandy capsized at noon on Monday, was discharged from hospital on Tuesday morning.

"He is in a stable condition and is currently recovering at home."

The search for the sixth crew member, Edwin Hunter from Mossel Bay, continued on Tuesday morning.

"Although the weather conditions have improved, attempts to reach the trawler were not successful as the swell is still posing danger to the rescuers."

They would attempt to tow the stranded vessel closer to Diaz Beach to allow them to search the trawler for the missing fisherman. - Sapa
