What about zim? I always wondered how zim's internet infrastructure compares to ours.

Angola pays EXTREMELY well. View property prices there & see how riduculously expensive they are. I was shocked. Then inquire about salaries & you will understand why / how people can afford them.

The land is very baron & there is tons of development happening in major cities. Some people go there & work for a few years & come back to SA & open up or buy into another business.

Look into it, seriously.

well, i reckon all the oil and diamonds they finding up the west african coast is going to cause the next big economic boom, so who knows, maybe I will go for it....

Ask them to tell you what the salary brackets are. Then, look at the living costs etc etc & see from there.
 
Well Angola is vary corrupt and extortion is a problem - someone I know has just left after endless problems he experience. Ironically he is off to Nigeria - thats how bad Angola is.
 
I have been to Angola 4 times this year. We have a branch in Luanda.

It's a real tough place to work, and is the most expensive place in the world. It is also quite dirty and run down...especially in the rainy season. Water and ELectricity is not a given...you will probably be running on a generator. Try living a week without running water. It's friggin hot and humid there all year round. Without aircon...you are dead!! It smells!! Did i say smell? I mean stinks!!!


A decent meal will cost $40-$50, and rent for a decent place can set you back a couple of thousand dollars a month....so if you planning on going there make sure you getting paid lots.

You need to know portuguese!!!! They don't speak good english there. So don't even bother especially for a software devellopment job if you aren't willing to take a crash course in portuguese.

There are loads of foreigners there...from different parts of Africa...and all over the world. Brazilians,Germans,French,South Africans..you find allsorts there.

YOu can make loads of $$$ there...so it is worth it if the job and perks are good. Just be careful that you know what you are getting into.There are lots of oportunities there. If you get one..grab it!!
 
Oh yeah...i forgot...never seen so much construction going on in one place..hundreds of cranes and buildings coming up all over the place..more than dubai during its boom! All being built by the chinese and vietnamese ,which i think is the biggest and largest growing immigrant community there.
 
I have been going to Angola for the last 10 years,,, spent about 2 there in total.

Like the expats always say, Angola is not for sissies..... :)

If you are planning to do a contract there, you must prepare yourself and also make sure that the terms that they offer is acceptable. As previously stated it is expensive to stay there. Other issues are transport, medical and sometimes even food.

* do not even think of driving there unless you are fluent in Portuguese, and you have been there for a few months.
* Most contracting companies will provide you with food and lodging. If it is a good company you will get a house that usually gets shared between a few people. If you aren’t.... well that can be a problem. I know that we paid for a house $ 10 000 p.m. and that was cheap. A nice flat will be min $ 2500 p.m.
* Medical is a big problem. Make sure that they make use of the private clinics in Luanda and they have International insurance for emergency flights to SA. And malaria is a big problem, but if you are smart everything will be OK.

Luanda itself is isn’t too bad, but I always get look after nicely by the companies that I went up for.
BTW, the internet there is horrible, unless you will be lucky enouh to get a company that has a good V-SAT link. Diginet/Cable is there but can be brilliant or the worst in the world, varies for day to day.
There is 3G, but that can be down for a day or 2 at a time.

So, if you are planning to go, you must do your homework.
