Its like YouTube....its not really the actual YouTube without any limitations.

Agreed, the logo and title give the impression that it's some kind of YouTube mirror. Seriously now :/ Great publicity which the wug needs, but you can't be misleading like that

Strictly speaking this will never happen. Google does not condone any form of Youtube mirroring or caching. I know as I have spoken to their Engineers.

There should be no confusion between Youtube and Wugtube -- in the same way as there *is* no confusion between a community built WUG and a privately funded Internet/ISP network.

youtube clone software (php/ffmpeg) has been around for a while afaik.
great idea to roll it out to wugs, nice thinking.

Actually, Google has an open peering arrangement, and there already is a Google 'mirror' facility in the works for all google services including YouTube, that they're even experimenting with in South Africa as far as I know. Information is yet to be released, and it's yet to be made public. Point is, if its viable and there's enough demand, we don't know what the future may hold - ZA wug may well have a true live YouTube mirror in the not SOO distant future

Not to say too much, but I have dealt directly with Google. You're correct. Though the only way it *could* work is if Google deploy their own equipment on the WUG. It's up to Google to make the call if the WUG is big enough. They just won't and don't support 3rd party caches and "mirrors".

I won't put it past Google to offer services to the WUGs.. would be a world first. Though it would perhaps only become a reality when we have 10,000 connected users. We have some way to go to get there though...

So in summary, Google mirror on the WUG = unlikely. Google cache = possible. Probable? I would not bet on it.
 
yeah I think you summed it up nicely. It is definitely possible to mirror, but I doubt they'd really consider it for a network the size of JAWUG/PTAWUG... just too much expense, and there's also the legality factor - it's basically turning the wug, which is a Non Profit Organization which is a community run project in this case, into a mini-internet that comprises one of the main reasons why people use the internet (Google and all its services including YouTube), and I'm not too sure that would go down well with the real competing ISPs :P

I'd be trolling it right now if my connection didn't just decide to drop again indefinitely...

It's weird. It was running solid 36Mbps for like 5 days. Then it disconnects and refuses to reconnect again :(

Mirroring YouTube is a great idea, but I thing we should first try something more local. If I'm not mistaken Zoopy is situated in Cape Town, I think a great idea would be to try and have a chat with the guys and maybe get a link to them so that wuggers can access Zoopy free over the wug.
