The days of the current generation of consoles are slowly dwindling down into the void. The console war, which has been raging on seemingly forever, will of course continue and will bring brand-new marketing schemes and techniques from the likes of Microsoft and Sony. The question that we have to ask ourselves is, when will their days of reigning supreme over the games industry ultimately end? The answer may surprise you…

Epic, the developers of the Gears of War series, have put this game on a four-five year time frame to be released. This is because they believe that Gears of War has “maxed out” [the XBox 360] on their games so far, and consider it impossible to create an original and unique third edition that will be up to par for a sequel of one of the best games of all time. Regarding the future of this series, Capp (Epic represantative) said, "If there were a next Gears of War, that it will be for the next console generation, whenever that is. If someone knows, please tell me! That's about four or five years away, I think."

Uncharted III developers have in fact released information that they ... have “maxed out” the PS3 console with their latest masterpiece of development, Uncharted 2: Drake’s Fortune. This series is capable of even rivalling the Halo franchise.

Definitely interesting if these opinions of these development houses are true. This does beg the question of where the bottleneck is in the PS3 architecture.

Naughty Dog 'maxed out' the PS3 with Uncharted 2

No ... timgaul ... impossible :/

The PS3 has probably only hit about 30 percent of its capacity. In fact, if one reads this very forum you'll that even that is a high number and it's closer to 20 percent.

Developers haven't begun to realise the processing power or how to use the cell processor. Just you wait until next year ...

:D

Actually, (jokes aside), the Cell is much more powerful than what it's being used for. Even the Roadrunner can't run Batman AA. The Cell is more of a number cruncher.

That's why people use their PS3 for Folding@home and not for gaming. :D

Yup. Next year will be the year of the PS3!

Further to this, Balestra mentioned that his team has completely maxed out the PS3’s number-crunching SPU cores with Uncharted 2. For comparison purposes, the original only utilized them to around 30 percent capacity, which is quite a difference. It’s the first time we’ve heard a developer outright admit they’re using the PS3 to its full potential...

30% for Uncharted and 100% for Uncharted 2. It might look good, but apparently that's as good as it's going to get.

Both the PS3 and Xbox 360 CPU are made by IBM, so they born from the same ground work ... different implementation for the needs of the manufacturer.

So in that sense its the most advanced architecture seen thus far in a gaming console.

Cool indeed :D

Not picking on Tim, but having said he is a developer, his comments on here suggest otherwise...the myBB forums has a reputation of very knowledgeable people, guess those are the ones not posting....

Development has 2 aspects when it comes to utilising resources, resource management (that is maxing out the console and cell processor for example) and the 2nd is code optimisation....

Running XP or Vista (not intentionally picking on MS either) can show you that are utilising let's say 90% of resources (CPU and Memory) with only 1 application (excel) open, but normally u can open 20 excel documents and be sub-50%...so u don't go out and buy more memory and a new processor, you reboot, why ? because it's the resource management by the O/S or the resource management of the program.

Similarly, ND could have identified that they were using +99% of the PS3 resources...unlikely(modern coding is more complex than just utilising a resource, there are threads, priorities and limits) but I know they said it so i'll accept it as truth...but it's 99% used based on their software architecture, development approach, actual coding and resource management...I remember the PS2 being all maxed out after 3 years and then there were some amazing games delivered after that...

I've heard this all before about next-gen because of hardware being maxed out, nonsense...ND wouldn't be talking about Uncharted 3 if they didn't believe they could improve in every facet of Among Thieves...

I'll believe it when a few developers say what EPIC said, it's not worth doing another on this platform...

BTW : I don't get the bottleneck question, PS3 has the best looking and performance games in the market for almost every genre...the developers are showing tons of interest in continuing developing on the platform and outdoing themselves...not just Naughty Dog (Uncharted 3), Guerilla Games (Killzone 3), Santa Monica (God Of War3 ) and i can go on....so i really don't get the question about PS3's bottleneck!

Anymore comments you can't back up? And why are you comparing Vista with consoles? Does anybody here know what he's on about?

EDIT: oh right, it's Friday! It's in a special fanboi rant code!

Well now i know not to listen to anything timgaul says about anything with his awesome maturity.

anyway, i still have to get an HD TV so when i do it will be like a new console for me lol. Still enjoying the media side of things more on the PS 3 than the games.

Nah, I've just grown tired of Lemons rants. He posts the same opinions time and again without so much as a shred of evidence. Over the years several Lemon incantations have come and passed. They never really have anything interesting to say except the same old fanboi nonsense. As such I couldn't be bothered to waste my time with a decent answer.

I also notice you came in, looked around, threw an insult and went out the back door. Not exactly inspiring in itself, but each to their own. But do come back when you have something valuable to add.

Just before the release of Uncharted 2, Neil Druckmann from Naughty Dog said that Uncharted 3 will look better than Uncharted 2. As they have indeed max out the PS3 on Uncharted 2, the benefits will come in more on code optimization & also a graphic engine overhaul.

But you can also google it and a lot of other gaming sites also state the same.

Well if it isn't then can Naughty Dog really blame the PS3 or just their own inability to write optimised code?

I wasn't comparing vista to consoles, i was comparing vista and applications to games (geez, was it not obvious, no way i'm gonna bother backing up stuff for you when u can't even understand a simple analogy and you're a *supposed* devleoper)...

So yes, i was comparing Vista to games which use system resources and indicating that maxing out system resources doesn't mean the end of the road as you were suggesting..

But then again, from a pretend developer i guess i can't expect much more...you're probably smart enough to learn from my posts but not man enough to say it, lucky for you, i don't need any affirmation, i don't share flawed opinions or arguments....the only thing your post showed is that the 360 might really be maxed out....as for the PS3, keep wishing ;)

But we get the warm fuzzy feeling inside because we are contributing to society. Not the warm sweaty feeling outside from an overheating xbox. :p
