WASHINGTON (CNN) -- The Pentagon will offer the H1N1 vaccination to detainees at the U.S. facility at Guantanamo Bay, officials there said Friday.

The Pentagon made the decision based on U.S. government assessments that people held in detention facilities are at high risk for the pandemic, said Maj. Diana R. Haynie, a spokeswoman for Joint Task Force Guantanamo Bay, which is in charge of holding the suspected terrorists.

"Detainees at JTF Guantanamo are considered to be at higher risk and therefore they will be offered the H1N1 vaccination," Haynie said.

"JTF Guantanamo conducts safe, humane, legal and transparent care and custody of detainees. As such, we must provide detainees the medical care necessary to maintain their health," she said.

But Rep. Bart Stupak, D-Michigan, urged the Pentagon to reconsider.

"As long as Americans must wait to receive the vaccine, the detainees in Guantanamo Bay should not be given preferential treatment to receive the H1N1 vaccination," Stupak said in a letter to Secretary of the Army John McHugh.

"Until this shortage is addressed, I urge Pentagon officials to reconsider this decision to vaccinate terrorist detainees ahead of Americans who are waiting," Stupak said.

Base officials had not received the vaccinations and did not know when they were expected to arrive, Haynie said.

Once the vaccinations are received, doses will be administered to active-duty personnel before being offered to detainees and others on the base, Haynie said.

The vaccination is mandatory for all uniformed personnel, she said.

The vaccinations will be voluntary for the detainees, who will be briefed on the virus and the vaccine before they decide whether to receive the vaccine.

Some of the detainees have already voluntarily taken the seasonal flu shot, Haynie said.

Put the criminals and terrorists, sorry "poor victims of society" before innocent law abiding citizens:rolleyes:

Good lord, such naivety mr alan. Do you really think it's because they are concerned about the "criminals and terrorists"?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gulf_War_syndrome

During Operation Desert Storm, 41% of U.S. combat soldiers and 57-75% of UK combat soldiers were vaccinated against anthrax.[16] The early 1990s version of the anthrax vaccine was a source of several serious side effects including GWI symptoms. Like all vaccines, it often caused local skin reactions, some lasting for weeks or months.[17] While the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved the vaccine, it never went through large scale clinical trials, unlike almost all other vaccines in the United States.[18]

One study found that deployed Persian Gulf War Syndrome patients are significantly more likely to have antibodies to the experimental vaccine adjuvant squalene (95 percent) than asymptomatic Gulf War veterans (0 percent; p<.001), [19] which raises the possibility that squalene was used experimentally (squalene is not approved for use as an adjuvant in the United States[20]) in the Anthrax vaccine given to soldiers prior to deployment in the Persian Gulf War to better induce immunity.

Test them on soldiers and prisoners. It's all been done before.

Or would you like to volunteer as a test subject yourself? Get some lupus, you know that "horrible disease", as an added bonus for your troubles.

I hope that these aren't forced. but yes everyone deserves fair justice, and not offering them these won't be fair justice. Many of them are also on trail, they aren't all guilty, and it would be of the utmost abomination if they had to now die. if being wrongly imprisoned is not enough. but yes most of them are probably guilty and deserve swine flu in it's full extent, however most are not all.

Typical BS post Alan, they should have closed that place down long ago.

America goes on about freedom and blah blah but keep people in a prison with no trial. HTF do we know these people have even done anything?

You American lovers are badly brainwashed.

Exactly! A lot of those people were walking past and then get hauled off and presumed guilty. Combo this with torture and we can make most of the forumites terrorists as they plead to stop it. The no trial thing is a HUGE thing which is why it was a big issue when they try to bring it back as terrorism measures in SA(prior a Israeli + Apahartheid SA thing only, no US also). So much for an example of democracy :p

*ignores tinfoil hat brigade*

You'll note it's not mandatory for detainees but it is for uniformed personal. Still no excuse that terrorist and prisoners get offered the choice before pregnant mothers for example. But I guess that's the "new direction" the U.S is heading.

Oh wasn't gitmo supposed to be closed months ago? Another "promise" broken it seems :erm:

Let's give a pregnant mother an untested vaccine. That's smart. Is your last name Hitler?

So wikipedia and the NCBI is part of the tinfoil hat brigade, Alan? Are they out to get you or something?
