This is the laymen's guide to convergence and the implications of the new Convergence Bill for businesses. In plain English the guide answers the following questions:

Hi Karnaugh,

What do you mean with a proper download link? The links seems to work from the MyADSL website?

The direct link to the download kind off messes up our market research... but then again its a real pain to fill in the survey... I'll concede
 
any one else down load a bad file ?
i get lot of boxes did you guys use a generic font ? or forget to imbed them ?
 
Thanks crbuys, interesting reading.. does seem tho as if Government wants to get license fees from just about anything.. next on the list: Outlook Tax :)
 
As I can't read the doc yet - can somebody give some quick answers to the following questions:

Will a website owner need a lisence?
Will a lisence be required to operate an "internet server" for hosting websites, email etc?

no..bill as it stands is ambiguous but it will either be clarified or ICASA will exempt internet content services such as web sites

quite possibly - as the bill stands these are application services...type of license and cost (if any) unknown and also a chance that may be exempted by ICASAA (think about how the govt would try to enforce such a licensing requirement and the inevitable result of every server being situated offshore

my opinion - others will differ

thanks but i was hopeing for the input of some one with a real os.

damed anoying softes cant even make a compatiable pdf. any one care to make a version we can all read ?

Care to make a post we can read? PDF is an Adobe format which, as Karnaugh stated, works perfectly fine in Acrobat 6 (an Adobe product). This implies that it is YOUR product that is not compatible with PDF and has absolutely nothing to do with Windows. Try thinking before making near illegible posts blaming others for your problems.
 
If the intentions of this bill are as per its aims then :

All licenses should be set at a maximum of R1.00 per annum.
Anything higher would be discriminatory.

Once telkom loses its monoploy over the copper there will be something to converge.

At the moment its all converged anyway - so what are they converging ?

All they really doing is converging CONTROL !! at a cost - licenses.

the pdf viewer i am useing opens the file just fine as with all pdf's includeing .ai's with pdf compatabilty. where it fails on is displaying the font haveing a bit of experance with fonts i know this problem is due to my os not haveing the particular font installed, though there is a option in pdf 6 to embed them if i rember corectly. As i am guessing the person that made the document is useing windows and windows has more then a few of there own std fonts. would you like a screen shot ?

ja well it is not a with out a base imo but that is my opinion, if you want to comment on that you will have to use computers in the same way i do. ;)

i will admin that i could be useing adobe's own viewer, which i would download but i am caped, though i think i would have the same problem, and for EVERY other pdf i have created and downloaded the program has viewed just fine.
 
If a lisence will be required for operating web-, mail and other "internet" servers, a lot of jobs are going to be created. Otherwise ICASA won't be able to handle all the paperwork.

Unfortunately somebody has to pay for those jobs. It will be those who operate such servers, who will pass on the costs to, eventually, end users.

Many SMME's will decide to rather call it the day, and I guess even more people will be without jobs, than the unneeded wasteful jobs created by this bit of law.
