Community Wi-Fi groups (WUGs) grow across SA

nOOb question, but how do you connect to the internet through these WUG's?? Can you connect with a normal ADSL Account like Afrihost....or do you need a separate ADSL line?

:) The WUGs do NOT provide Internet access... you need an ADSL line for that...

you connect to them via a Wireless Network Device. It has nothing to do with the internet.

I still see it happening one day...

The goal of wug.za.net is to integrate all the WUGs around the country and potentially link them together in the future. http://www.wug.za.net/

The logical step, after the event of the above quote, would be to get the I-ECNS and I-ECS licenses and take on the market.

Yes, I know they said that they won't ever offer internet access...

The WUG has always interested me, but being a student and not having R2000+ for equipment, has delayed me doing anything about it.
As well as a big tree might be in the way of LOS.

One day :)

Im in PE, and today i got a quote for a started kit from our local guys, R1550 Incl vat. Its the basic basic kit not expandable or anything unless you upgrade the router board. But to be very honest R1550 is not a lot of money considering what you get out of it.

Think of it as a network with hundreds, maybe thousands of users on it. WAN comes to mind but im not sure if one could use that term for this. :) One day when im big and moved to the city, im signing up defo!

Many services which are available on the net is also available on the WUGs - think file sharing, online gaming and the like.

ok - gaming like when one uses a LAN. Is that right?
could be cool for file sharing :)

What are the speeds like, and how do i know if i have coverage in my area?

check wug.za.net for East London, or start your own and link to PE!

Think I'll leave that to the pros.
Nope - thats not how wugs start...

Wugs start when 2 clueless young guys have a bright idea. They then try to connect and learn everything they know from reading up online, asking questions and trial and error.

That is how wugs start :D

And they can join the #ctwug, #jawug or #ptawug channels on IRC for some help.

I remember there is a dude in Oudshoorn that had a lot of questions a awhile back. He is now busy building a wug over there :D
