Internet future in South Africa

Not to be a pessimist but at this point it seems very bleak to me......

Why? With all the new cables coming, the ISPs buying Seacom bandwidth, ISPs thinking up new packages, Afrihost's R29 thing, Telkom's NGN project, Neotel's uncapped product, Axxess/Openweb "uncapped". You don't think we're moving in the right direction? Were these things happing 5 years ago?

They should have happened 5 years ago yes....

Why?

1. With all the new cables coming
2. the ISPs buying Seacom bandwidth
3. ISPs thinking up new packages
4. Afrihost's R29 thing
5. Telkom's NGN project
6. Neotel's uncapped product,
7. Axxess/Openweb "uncapped".

1. Very true, but endless delays
2. Seacom bandwidth have not filtered through to you and me the consumer
3. Silver lining
4. VERY NICE DEAL (Just wish people would stop complaining on myBB)
5. Branding
6. Neotel = F$kkol coverage for the average Joe
7. Very nice to haves....but still expensive for the average Joe

But yes, the silver lining is that things are happening, just not at the pace we all hope for......so the future, a little less bleak but still bleak

Too much bandwidth

MTN dude said:
This year the virtual and legal monopoly on bandwidth was ended. We will start to see the bandwidth that we need. In a few years time we might find we have more bandwidth than we know what to do with.

ROTFL! I'll add that one to the "640k should be enough for anybody" list of quotes.

Not to be an eternal optimist but 'it can only get better' surely? :D
I do agree with the happy camper. Things cant get worse, but only improve. We may never be first world in terms of internet, but things will get better. We will see ADSL2+ eventually, its a given. Caps will be increased, no doubt about it. Its just a matter of time, only problem is, not everyone has time.

its not going anywhere. its well-oiled money-making machine of note.

why is everything going to become cheaper and never really do, everything is immanent , i still think nothing going to change till way after 2010.....

+1

If mobile is the future we need some real competition to Vodacom and MTN. It has been ages since they dropped their prices...

Online advertising has not taken on in SA sadly.
Many companies are still scared to do this, but they are so narrow minded that they are losing out big time!

One of my websites generates in excess of R2mil turnover per annum and my audience is all local! So it CAN be done! This is a great opportunity for the "big brands" to get good exposure cheaply, but NO they would rather pay a fortune to the media moguls instead and probably receive less exposure rand for rand than they would on websites!

As for the thieving ISP's here...
1. I host my websites abroad - you won't find it cheaper here EVER! I believe that our generation will be dead before we see true broadband :(
2. All my web content is local - Nevertheless still well visited even though our connection sucks and I use servers abroad
3. All the constant lies and deceipt that we get fed with in South Africa makes me sick and my greatest satisfaction would be to see them all go to hell!

The only vision for our internet is the greed that abounds in making a few rich even richer and the longer the SA consumer allows them to do this, we will hardly see any major improvements that will benefit the masses.

You're just complaining for the sake of it, it's your default mode. Do you like wallowing in your own negativity? There's nothing you can do about the crap internet here, live with it. You'll just make yourself ill complaining about it everyday!

As someone else recently stated on this forum, if all you have to whine about is the internet access then your life is really in good shape atm, focus on that for a bit, it might make you feel better

I shall NEVER totally succumb to the addage.."Dis die Wet van Transvaal...*** en betaal" ... NEVER!

It is because of this very SORRY attitude of the majority of South Africans that we live in this depressing state, and it is this very attitude that allows these ISP, Media and Financial Moguls to legally ROB US!!!

"Unity is Strength"...Pity that this old motto of ours has disappeared into the jungle mists. One ant may not be able to move a sugar cube, but a 100 will @!@

Just imagine 1000+ placard holders outside the ISP conference slating Hellkom...The TV Media will be there quickly!! But no one has the balls to do this! If it were in the EU, oh man there would be 1 million plus people demonstrating!
