ADSL in Lonehill, Gauteng

Are there any members living in Lonehill who have 4096kbps lines? At the moment I am staying across the road from Fabz estate, and I'm simply too far from the exchange (DS and US attenuation too high) for anything over 1024kbps ( I tried ans it simply doesn't stay synced).

If you are in Lonehill and have a 4096 line, please let me know (or pm me) the street you're in - i just want to know how likely it is that I can up the speed once I move.

I wish. I'm probably about the same distance as you from the Fourways exchange, but on the other side of Main Rd.

I can hold 512Kbps sync quite steadily but run constant errors. At best ~3 crc/header errors per sec, but after raining (like now) it escalates, there definately seems to be water seepage somewhere along the route. Have had Telkom try put me on other spare pairs but this made no difference, problem lies on a trunk cable or junction further upstream (which they're not prepared to fix).

So for my point of view, the copper in Lonehill is shot. Only way I can see us getting 4096 (or better), is for Telkom to install an outdoor DSLAM (IMAX) at say the shopping centre.
 
Your nearest exchange is from Montecasino or Dainfern..
I live in Douglasdale off Leslie Drive.. I'm only getting 2048/512
 
i am next to leaping frog and on 4meg line with no problems.

Cool, there is some hope then. I am moving to Concourse Crescent, right next to the church. Hopefully I can get 4meg there.
 
I just recently moved to Lonehill - Calderwood Road. Telkom installed my standard telephone line on 1 April, and now I'm waiting for Telkom to convert it to ADSL. After reading all these problems...I'm afraid of the speeds I'm going to be getting. :(

When speaking to the techie who install my line, he also said that the DSLAM is in Monte Casino, which is about 4km away. But now I hear that the copper wiring in Lonehill is up to hell!! OY VEY!!! There's no winning with Telkom!!!

The Telkom techie also spoke to me about a new thing that's coming from Telkom called W-CDMA. And apparently there is a tower they are building in the Cradle of Humankind which will apparently reach Lonehill and I will be able to use my ADSL account with their W-CDMA access, as they are interchangeable.

I don't know how true this is, but it sounded like a bunch of BS! W-CDMA is the same as 3G technology and I doubt the signal will reach all the way from Cradle of Humankind to Lonehill, let alone me being able to use my ADSL account detail from another ISP with their W-CDMA network.

We stay in Beverley Estate which is right next to Fabs Estate and we get 4Meg, no problem.
 
I am on forest drive (the top end of lonehill closer to billy's and monte) - 4mb line - cruises like a bat out of hell.

as the crow flies, i am about 1km from you.
 
also in Lonehill... stay on Notten Rd, just off Crestwood (pretty close to the Vet), and I get the full 4mbps.

I knew a guy who stayed in Tallam (Sceales Rd, very close to crawford prep) and he was struggling with getting stable 512k sync). This was a while back (long before the 4mbps and 1mbps lines were introduced).

Another mate of mine stays in Drenin Close (Close to the Methodist church) and he also gets 4mbps.

Beverley Estate is at the end of Concourse Crescent. If you drive to the end of Concourse Crescent, Fabs Estate is on the right and Beverley Estate is directly in front.
 
You guys are probably connecting to the Dainfern DSLAM, as I would presume that the Monte Casino DSLAM is too far for you guys to reach. Well I just moved to a pretty old complex...I think it was built in the 80's, so I'm guessing the copper wires are shot and I won't be getting good syncing speeds....will have to wait for Telkom to convert the line to ADSL and see what results I get....which means....moving again in 12 months time. Eish....
 
Wow...so many guys in lonehill!
I stay close to the leaping frog, and applied for a 384 line today...they mentioned something about all the ports are used and it might take longer for the line to be installed.
 
Yeah, I wonder if I'll run into the same problem....."all the ports in Lonehill have been used up."......then I sit with a phone line that I'm not using at all, paying that each month....waiting for an ADSL port to become available. I'll pull my hair out if that happens!!!
 
We are leaving Lonehill at the end of the month so ours will become available :D
 
Don't feel alone. Rumour has it that a Telkom Board member living in Lonehill area applied for ADSL and was told it was not feasable!!!
 
Well hopefully he does something about it!!! Probably not....Telkom will just give him a 3G modem with free data and he'll be good.

btw, does anybody know what Poynting are doing in Lonehill? Specifically, I am refering to the 3 poles that have been put up, with solar panels, and RF antennas on them. There are 2 antennas on each pole, a directional panel, and what looks like an omni-directional.

Any ideas who these are being put up for, and what they are for?
