My other hard drive just got fried

Hey,

Im just not having any luck with my desktop. Following on from this thread:
http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/showthread.php?t=201599 I got my new hard drive and sat down to get everything setup. I plugged in my new power supply and new hard drive, switched the machine on and immediatly started smelling smoke. I switched it off quickly and went through all the connections to make sure everything was ok. I switched it on once more and saw a small spark and heard a pop from my old hard drive. GRRRR!!!:mad:

Needless to say it seems as though my old hard drive is now also a paper weight!! :(

Whats going on here? I guess my original idea that the power supply caused all the problems was wrong.

If I dont plug in a hard drive at all, in other words I just start the machine with my motherboard, graphics card and dvd plugged in,...everything works fine. I plug in a hard drive and there's issues.

Does anyone have any advice here?

I really hope I haven't lost all my data on my old hard drive :(

Yes! my advice is take it to a Technician of some sort to check it out for You.

You say you smelled burning and heard a pop and expect the drive to still work?

yES THE DATA SHOULD STILL BE ON THE MAGNETIC MEDIA BUT THE CHANCE (dAMN cAPS) that the data can be read is null and void unless you can source the exactly the same model and drive size and change the electronic board. I just hope the MoBo is still ok? Also if it is the drive motor that jammed then of course it means even a new board will not help. Then a R3000.00 drive recovery would be required. They then transplant the magnetic media and or parts in another "good" drive to recover the data from the megnetic media.

May I direct you to a button on your keyboard, it should say "backspace" or "Bkspace" or have something representing an arrow pointing to the left on it...
this will erase any text you have typed by mistake, and you can then type it over.

Kind of like Tippex, except cooler :D

Actually some just have an arrow indicting backwards :D.
 
Thanks for the reply. Yes I know it's wishfull thinking to expect my hard drive to work (or at least work long enough for me to get everything off it). But I have so much stuff on there which ill now probably never get back. Not just stuff that can be baught or downloaded :( So yes,...the wishfull thinking continues.

Anyway, more to my original question. Why do you think my pc starts up fine with no hard drives plugged in, but then starts with these issues when I plug a hard drive in. Now im too scared to plug my new hard drive in to install windows on it because im afraid it too will fry.

You are right in that I should probably take it in to get seen to properly.

Could be that the drive failed as you witnessed or that the MOBO have a problem blowing the drives. Get a old unwanted small capacity drive, plug it in MoBo and check what happens. Your data can be recovered depending on drive model/age/condition and another same model/age/better working condition as donor for transplants to teporary repair the drive to recover the data.

Check the voltage output is within spec on the molex and other rails with a multimeter ?
 
Sometimes the motherboard make contact with the backplate of the case.(short). Remove the screws and then remove motherboard. It might be that you need to install supports at the back side of the motherboard. On some cases you don't need to install the supports, others you really need to, otherwise you may bend the motherboard enough to cause a short by touching the chassis. This can typically happen when memory, cards, etc or even a heavy cpu cooler fan has been installed.
If you can adjust the voltage selection switch at the back of your psu, ensure that it is on 220V.

Can you check you PSU rails with a multi meter? Put it on DCV 20. The black wires are ground, The red = 5V, yellow = 12V
