Im using Ubuntu 9.04 and i got one of those Free Web Africa Accounts andi wanted to use it obviously so i went into the terminal....and type "pppoe conf" and set up the whole thing but used the username and password that Web Africa gave me and the connection seems to work perfectly...so is this how its done, am i using the Web Africa Account now or am i using my normal Acccount? how do i tell?

do you have bridge mode or half bridge set up in your router?
if you have successfully set up the pppoe conf in Ubuntu and you can access the internet, then you must be using one of the two in your router and it is working.
but you can do a tracert to check.

Um....im not sur of anything u just said.....wats a Tracert and a bridge mode?
But i didnt change anything on my router only the connection details....
There is usually a Status page on a router's web admin interface that will indicate if the current WAN session is PPPoE or not - be sure to check this. Make sure that the router's settings are set to bridging mode.

Copy the IP address that you see and in the terminal, type:
replace xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx with the IP that you got from icanhazip.com
You should see "Web Africa Networks" somewhere in your result.

Edit: Maybe there is a good reason for you to want to use bridge mode... but you can still double-check your external IP this way....

adrianx's solution is the easiest I reckon.
You could also get your IP address by going to http://www.whatsmyip.co.za/ddclient.php
Another simple check would simply be to see if you can access local & international sites, since the Web Africa trial accounts are only for local?
tracert is for Windows, but you can actually install the app in Ubuntu too.
traceroute is the same app, but for Linux/Ubuntu. It would show you how the packets are hopping from the source to the destination. That way you could usually check which connection is being used, simply by checking the second or third hop, where the first hop would be your router in most cases.
Now, if you have the WA account dialed and routing table setup correct, using traceroute wouldn't show 10.0.0.2 (or whatever your router's IP address is) for the first hop, but an Internet IP address or unable to resolve it instead .

I would just do a trace route and see if the hops went over Web Africa's network
The output should look like below, note hops 1-4 (You can see this is the start of the routing and shows it goes over wa.co.za.) The command on linux would be "traceroute domain.xx"
