ATI Radeon HD4890 and 20inch Monitor

Hey there,

I want to purchase the HD4890 along with a Samsung 20inch LCD monitor (res 1600x900). What would the performace be like on this in terms of gaming?

Sorry if this is a stupid question, but basically what im trying to make sure of is that I get the most out of the HD4890 and get the best gaming experience. So I dont want to get a monitor that would hamper that. Id like to run games on as high settings as possible.

Im not too clued up on monitors and whats good/bad for gaming.

ps. It would be on an i5 system with 2gigs ram.

I would advise to get another 1 or 2 gigs of ram, you'll see a marked improvement.. But a 4890 will be easily powerful enough to run anything on a 20" monitor :)
 
Rather get a 1920X1080 monitor (the Samsung 2333SW is going really cheap these days). That HD4890 is a phenominal card for the price! I rate it up there with the GTX260 at least! My wife has it on a Q6600 (2.4ghz stock) with 2 gig of ram. It plays anything.
 
Its ok... but will never tax your gfx card..... you could go much bigger on the monitor with that card
 
Yeah if you can afford it get it.. 20" is quite small for gaming. But that's your preference :) 4890 is really meant to be played at higher res.

1920 X 1200 at least with a 24" lcd will rock.

At the moment budget wise the samsung 20inch that I have my eye on is looking good because it's R1550. I could probably spend a little bit more I guess if there's another monitor out there you guys recommend?

Any links to something good roughly in that price range?
 
its all relative guys... i got a 22" (1680*1050) with a 4890 and Im only just happy with the framerates with eye candy on

especially with RPG games

for me, to move up to 1920*1080 on a 24" LCD, with same gfx would be total madness!

but thats just me :p

just make sure you AWARE of the native res of the LCD you buying...

Yup, that's what im wondering about. I play mostly RPG's and strategy games. So with that in mind I would really like my games to look amazing. If that means rather getting a 20inch LCD with a native res of 1600x900 instead of a 23inch which might not get as high of a framerate etc, then so be it.

A pity you dont have a connection that can get you one at PC Zone (Durbs) they have a special on the 2333SW @ R1599 at the moment. And allthough slightly old, its still a sweet monitor!

What RPG's? Currently playing Dragonage @1920x1080 on a 23" monitor with my hd4850 and everything maxed.

Intel e5300 @ 3Ghz and 2 Gigs of ram.
 
rissen are you planning on watching lots of HD (1920*1080) movies on your PC?

I went from a 20" (1680*1050) to a 22", also 1680*1050 and took no performance hit which was great.

if you not into HD movies I say go 1680*1050 22"

its a winner, I havent looked back

I was looking at a 24" a while back, but I would need a 5870 :D
 
Thanks Samsung from Kalahari does sound like a great deal. Could someone please just explain to me the concept of native resolution. Does that mean that everything you run whether it be general windows stuff, or gaming, has to be run on that resolution.

So when you go into your game settings, you could only have that one resolution. Then based on that you could play around with the other settings like anti-aliasing, framerate etc.

So basically you have to make sure that your graphics card and other setup is powerfull enough to run everything as you like it on based on the native res of the monitor that you get. If it cant, then rather go for a smaller monitor. Or am I confused?

Edit: HTC_guy: No im not really going to be watching HD movies on it. (maybe sometimes but not often). I have a mvix multimedia player which I use to watch all my movies on the tv. So it will be for gaming mostly. Games like Dragon Age for example, Bioshock 2 when it comes out etc.

you quite right. different ppl have different ideas on this, but I say always use a LCD in its native res. Some people dont, but thats retarded in my view as you gonna get loss in picture quality right away...
