If you're going to Russia, avoid the pies.

'Man Butchered And Eaten By Three Tramps'
2:04pm UK, Sunday November 15, 2009
Graham Fitzgerald, Sky News Online
Russian police have arrested three homeless men suspected of killing and eating a 25-year-old and selling parts of his body to a kebab and pie kiosk.

It's not known if the kebab seller cooked and sold any of the man's flesh
The alarm was raised when bits of a corpse were found near a bus stop on the outskirts of Perm, about 720 miles east of Moscow.
A statement on the Perm police website said the three alleged cannibals had previous criminal records.
The statement said they were detained on suspicion of stabbing a man to death and then chopping him up for food.
It went on: "After carrying out the crime, the corpse was divided up.
"Part was eaten and part was also sold to a kiosk selling kebabs and pies."
It was not clear from the statement if the kiosk had cooked any of the man's flesh and sold it to customers.
The three suspects are due to appear in court on Monday.

Kiosks buy meat from homeless guys ?

I don't eat pies period! Don't trust the meat, was always more mush than meat.

I really feel for you guys in Gauteng.. in the Eastern Cape there is the famous Shamrock pie. Quality quality quality. When I lived in Gauteng.. the pies were disgusting. Theres not much I like from that part of the world, totally glad I dont live there anymore.

If anyone finds themselves in the Durban area I can HIGHLY recommend Bread Ahead in Cowey Rd, Berea. Their pies (and other stuff) is to die for and they stand behind their product 110%.

Well, the Ukranian version of the Pie was quite ... um ... interesting.

I did try to find out what exactly that meat was supposed to be, but nobody who could understand me seemed to actually know.

I opened the pie up, and, it looked a lot like over cooked and a very old venison.

Kind of an acquired taste, much like olives are an acquired taste.

I etted about 5 of them during the 14 days I was there.

@daveza, well, I hope the vet was not a vegetarian. :p
@ponder, nope, nothing like that.

You get off the train, and end up in a flea-market (Not in Kiev itself, I found these on the city outskirts and in Zaporozhye), there will be about 2 or 5 stalls selling this. They have a large pot being kept warm with the filling in the pot.

The "pie" is a lot like a vetkoek, but it is magical in that when they put the fresh filling into the "pie", the pastry suddenly has sides, and the pastry is light and not oily.

They then squeeze the end-shut (bare handed) and for some reason squeeze the other end shut (which was shut), then for some extra cash, they will brown it for you, but I never tried that because I could not figure out what they were trying to say.

Somehow the ends stay shut while you munch it and it's tasty as all heck, much like our pies, but the meat, much like our pies, is ... well ... "heavily flavoured".

Some factoids. Did you know:

Vienna sausages are made from minced cow nose. Cow noses that have had a drippy cow cold recently, are sought after for that extra tang.

The real cordon bleu frankfurters have cow eyes & ears in them with chicken feet for texture. They tried adding chicken beaks but this made them too crunchy. They use them for something else.

They spit in your food at restaurants (don’t worry, you can’t taste it.).

The male staff do obscene things to chicken carcasses before they fry them. The best scientific opinion has it that the AIDs virus cannot live outside the human body. Anyway, the frying process at KFC kills it. The rest is protein.

Also avoid the Caviar and Crab flavored Lays that they sell there.. believe me if given the choice between Caviar flavored Lays and those pies, I would take the pie every time!! Those chips are the worst kind of "tangy" that you get. the crab ones ain't soooo bad. Just another one of the reasons why I say Russians are crazy.. DAMN crazy!! but awesome!
