The same poll was up on newshost. I was amazed at how many people have a 384 line - just under half the voters.

I had 384 when I was in SA (My parents still use the 384 line now) and I currently have 20 Meg in the UK (for £21-50 a month) it is uncapped of course and I get a max download speed of about 2.1 MB/s
I answered 384 in the poll since you are trying to find out what the average south african has. But yea there does seem to be a divide between 384 and 4meg, because I dont think the 512 offers much in the way of value for money. (If you do a R / kb calculation)

Who uses 512k? Why?
Its not really worth the increase in rental price considering it not that much faster than a 384k line.
Surprised anyone has it.

Wonder when, if ever, Telkom will be reducing line rental costs? Bandwidth is becoming cheap dare I say it but line rental remains exorbitant!!!!

It gives me an idea of just how out of touch Telkom is. Someone at the Telkom shop asked me how much cap I have. I said 8GB. The Telkom employee asked me if I manage to finish that in a month.

Well They going to increase lines speeds for the smae price, just like they did with the cap

I know a guy who has 512lps becuase 4mbs wont reach decent speeds on his physical line

I think a better poll for the 4Mbps users would be what speed do you sync at - 1,2,3 or 4.

The cap used to be 6GB. It is now 5GB. That's the truth.

With the price hierarchy I find that its not worth it to get a 512k line. Either go for 384k or 4mb.
As for the cap usage, I would probably require 1-2GB per month on browsing alone, even if I disable most of the adds & flash. Considering that I play FPS games online too, I'm using considerably more than just 2GB/month, all of which are local traffic luckily.
I totally agree with the Cisco Internet study ( http://ww2.itweb.co.za/office/cisco/0910210647.htm ) that only a small percentage of Internet users really require lots of cap & bandwidth. I guess all this would certainly change when DSTV & TV channels would be streamed on the Internet and we have affordable & fast Internet for all...

I almost also had to settle for 512. When I wanted to upgrade telkom told me that only up to 512 was available in my area. They said I should order that. Only after asking about 5 times did they say they would see what they could do. Two days later : Hey PRESTO: 4 mg.
