need to add 5th hdd to mac pro 2009

Anyone know how to do this?
I've read that you need a custom caddy for this, anywhere to get them in SA?
 
Although if I was you, I'd buy an IcyDock FW800 enclosure and run the HDD from there, I'm actually doing that as I have a Mac Pro with an Intel X25M and 3 HDDs in the regular bays.

I need to upgrade asap - running out of space here!

I was also thinking about that - does os x support bluray playback? Haven't looked into it.

I see that maxupgrade kit can accomodate 2 SATA plus optical drive, maybe thats the way to go for now.

You can't play back BD but you can burn. There are 3 ways. One is direct in Final Cut Pro (FCS 3) not with DVD Studio Pro, with Roxio Toast or with Adobe Premiere's DVD burning app. You can watch BDs in a Virtual Machine Windows or via Bootcamp.

Another nice external solution is the Drobo and Drobo Pro but they're quite expensive, they offer redundancy though, but they do record in a proprietory format. They are FW800 but the Drobo has been said to be quite slow by some people.

The IcyDock is a very nice enclosure, as easy to swap the drive as it is to mount it in a Mac Pro.

cool, will look into the bluray thing, is VM fast enough for BD playback?

i think i'll go for both the icydock and that maxupgrade kit, that way the mac is futreproofed storage-wise. Thanks for the links.

I heard it is. Parallels does offer up to 8 cores support while VMWare fusion is only 2. You may need to run AnyDVDHD as well.

The drives work on similar caddies in the iCYDock. There are 4 screws and a lever, just like the 4 screws of the Mac Pro caddy system (built in one). The screws are smaller though.

Hey why not get that 8 SSD solution, than you can have 2GB (not Gb) /sec speeds :)
