Is my soundcard dead?

So I formatted my pc, my XP installation disc doesn't work, I install Vista.

I had sound on XP but now it's gone. I did install the usual drivers and device manager reports everything as fine.
It is onboard sound, did it fry? Or is it just a driver issue?

Help would be appreciated!

100% its a driver issue:),I will put a horse on the block for this one:D
 
u need the specific vista drivers from realtek / via website
 
Okay, it's been a while and I'm done struggling.
I installed Windows 7 and the latest drivers. Still no sound.
The realtek audio manager says that the speakers' plug is not plugged in , but it is.
Any ideas?
 
Perhaps try a different set of speakers, or try those speakers in a different known working system, a mates' perhaps. That would eliminate the speakers.
 
I don't think it's a windows problem.
I prolly should've mentioned that I switched the moterboard into another case.
It's like the rear audio jacks doesn't exist anymore.
 
I had the exact same problem... I tried EVERYTHING from drivers to reformat n all...
ended up needing a new mobo anyway and it was fine as soon as my mobo went in
