Ubuntu must be the easiest OS that I have ever installed....and I have done a few.
Just 15 - 20 minutes and you have a great OS, internet browser + full Office suite at your fingertips. Try that with a Windows install.

Which Office Suite? OpenOffice?
Not trying to hit you below the belt here, but OO is THE most frustrating software package I have ever used. It hangs, it's slow (startup and shutdown) and I'd like to add a few more expressive verbs...but honestly, I hate it. Installed MS Office 2007 on the same system and haven't had one issue.
Long story short, my one test experience with Ubuntu 8.04 is something I never want again. It has put me off Linux as a whole for life, the emotional scars; will never heal

...lol... I can understand your frustration. I couldn't even get my 3G working on 8.04, but trust me on this, give 9.10 a shot. Even if you just install it with Wubi. If you don't like it, simply go into Windows Add/Remove programs, and uninstall it. I'm by no means a Linux fanboi, heck, I don't even use the command line, but that's how easy 9.04 and 9.10 are. If you've ever wanted to try an Ubuntu release, now is definitely the time.

Which Office Suite? OpenOffice?

Yes, OpenOffice.
Much nicer version that comes with Ubuntu 9.10, think it's 3.11....and I seriously think you should give it another try.
*I'm still using Vista Business on my notebook, need it for my Server 2008 MCITP certification. Runs quite fast with a WD Scorpio 7200RPM hard disk.

There is an app to get 3G working in 8.04, and functionality was native in 8.10 and 9.04. Not sure about 9.10, haven't tried it yet as I am on DSL now. I am quite happy with OOo, the newer versions work very nicely with Word docs, even this new .docx and .xlsx format that Microsoft have come up with.
But yeah, run the live CD to see that everything plays nicely with your system and hardware. Even try the Wubi install as Sparky recommends, then if you don't like it, you can uninstall it.
If you do install Ubuntu, most solutions to common, and some not so common, issues can be found here, if required. That's been my experience, anyway.
