Telkom falling behind even further - 1024k ADSL for 15 pounds (R 180) per month

The UK's BT telecommunications company has been offering 512k ADSL (with 2 static IPs, no bandwidth CAP and no port shaping / protocol prioritisation and a user contention ratio of 4:1) for the last 3 years at about R 300 per month.

Having just returned from London, BT is now offering customers the same service with double the bandwidth at half the cost. This 1024k ADSL (1024 downstream, 512 upstream) costs only 15 pounds (about R 180) per month.

I can't help the feeling that we (South Africans) are being screwed over - despite tremendous efforts by this and other user communities to educate the powers that (try to) be and improve the choking caused by the monopoly of Telkom.

My g/f just upgraded to 1MB Up and Down for 24 pounds a month. Uncapped. The free biscuit wasn't included but the upgrade took a slow and painful hour, no phone calls, one online request.

Something to be said then ?
 
we can only hope that some big international telecoms company comes knocking on the door and snatches the SNO licence
 
It's very true that is all about: 'Location, Location, Location!'. The only reason why we are so behind in telecommunications is our unfortunate isolation from the rest of the world and serious lack of competiton :/. Woe is me, South Africa!
 
I wonder if you would have come back to SA if you knew the state of telecoms here?
 
You know what amazes me is that I know quite a few people in the uk and they actually still use dial up.
