Durban - Animal Rights Africa (ARA) on Wednesday said it was disappointed by Zulu King Goodwill Zwelithini's decision to boycott a meeting called to discuss a bare-handed, bull-killing ritual.

"Sadly, it appears that the king remains unwilling to enter into any dialogue or mediation and is clearly not prepared to support the efforts of the commission," the organisation's Steve Smit said in a statement.

Tuesday's meeting was convened by Pat Mkhize, commissioner for the promotion and protection of the rights of cultural, religious and linguistic communities, to try and resolve a dispute over the Ukweshwama ritual.

Mkhize called the meeting after Animal Rights Africa (ARA) went to the Pietermaritzburg High Court on Tuesday in a bid to stop the ritual, scheduled to take place on December 5 at Zwelithini's palace in Nongoma. Ukweshwama is a symbolic way of thanking God for the first crops of the season.

ARA, which argues the ritual is cruel, had agreed to attend the meeting hoping the matter would be settled out of court, said Smit.

"We agreed to the meeting in the hope of reaching some kind of amicable agreement that would result in the suspension of the bull-killing event at this year's Nongoma festival."

The ASA argues that during the Ukweshwama ritual, men pull out the bull's tongue, stuff sand in its mouth and try to tie its penis in a knot.

The Zulu Royal Household has vowed to go ahead with the ceremony, even if the court rules against it.

Great stuff ... lets get all the ... but you eat meat protesters defend tying a bull's penis into a knot after pulling out it's tongue as exceptable behavior.
 
Disgusting, I hope the court smacks this ritual in the face.

I was in Angola on an excursion years ago, at the one village we stopped at during July they have some ritual whereby they catch a small bush buck (antelope) and then rip it apart - f###### savage to see.

3 so called men grabbed the legs and then just starting pulling!
Thing was screaming, still stick with u for years.

sorry it was in the cow sacrifice before wc2010 games thread, where they related it to abattoirs.

sorry for not stating it more clearly, and I eat meat so this is not a debate on eating meat, but rather the barbaric ritual mentioned in the post.

I also love how people tend to bring Spain's bull-fighting and cultural tradition/heritage into the matter. Civilisation moves forward, if it moved backward we'd be covered in mud and eating dung for breakfast.

Cruelty is cruelty, no matter how you look at it. You eat meat? Fine, don't torture the animal to death beforehand. There is something unequivocally wrong with people who enjoy torturing and killing animals.

Well when you look at small children that enjoyed torturing animal, for instance Charles Manson was known for hanging Cats in a bag from a tree and setting it on fire, look at marilyn Manson and what he does to animals. It takes a certain kind of person to be able to do the type of things described in this ceremony, do we as a country wanna be associated with such barbaric actions?!
 
I was unaware that the ritual to be performed at the stadium was the same ritual performed for the king.

This seems to be what is implied, is this true?

nope the stadium one is where they slit the cows throat and let it bleed to death .. this one they pull the tongue out first it seems so that people are spared the cries when it's penis is reef-knotted
 
*eats a T- bone * honestly we are humans, we are meant to eat meat :) hence omnivores! as for the torture part, well that is natures way.... I am sure a buck will scream just as much when a lion bites him in the Kruger.

Haven't seen many Lions playing Cub scout and using a bull's penis to get his Badge for knot tying...
