Mouse + Keyboard freeze after wake/screensaver

Been having this intermittent problem where the mouse and keyboard stop working after the mac wakes either from sleep or from a screensaver. Unplugging and replugging doesn't work, the system is still running but the peripherals are unresponsive. Only way to get out of it is hard boot by holding the power button down. Anyone heard of this problem or know of a fix?

specs - mac pro 2009, 10.5.8, standard keyboard, ms wireless 5000 mouse.
 
I don't know if this is related. My late 2008 MacBook did that for a while, and the problem was addressed with a firmware update from Apple. Maybe it's the same thing - do you have then newest firmware on your Mac?

not sure if i do, but since it's an '09 mac surely it would include that fix?

edit: just checked, seems i have the most current firmware.

Not sure if it's the same thing, but there was something about MS mice freezing if u have your dock's magnification set to on.
 
i have the same prob with my ms mouse on the latest 13' macbook pro, but if u click the touchpad then everything works fine, the ones plugged in from usb dont seem to respond... didn think imacs or macpros would hav that prob though...
 
It sucks, can't find a fix for it, apple keyboard also freezes.
Only thing that seems to work is disabling sleep/screensaver.
 
not sure if this effects Macs too but I just had a problem like this and discovered that it was due to isuspm.exe running. I have no idea how Macs work but disabling this cured my laptop.
 
Check under System Preferences - Bluetooth - Advanced - Allow Bluetooth devices to wake this computer, cant remember if it should be on or off. Try both but restart the mac between the two tests.

I have bluetooth turned off, never use it, so this probably isn't related.
