Google refuses to remove 'offensive and racist' Michelle Obama image Search engine decides not to take down image of US President's wife with monkey features

Google has refused to remove an image that depicts Michelle Obama with monkey features, but has purchased online ads apologising and explaining how its search results work.

The image, which appears as the top search result when "Michelle Obama" is entered into Google Images, has led to protests that it is offensive and racist and should be removed.

Google has decided not to remove the image but has instead opted to take out an ad, which sits above the offensive picture on the relevant Google Images web page, to explain its decision. The ad runs with the headline "An explanation of our search results".


The US search engine company said its policy was "not to remove a page from our search results simply because its content is unpopular or because we receive complaints concerning it".


Aware of the potential criticism over the stance, Google explained in its ad that as a search engine it was not responsible for questionable online content ranking highly on its website.


Google said that in general internet search engines are a "reflection of the content and information that is available on the internet" and that a ranking "relies heavily on computer algorithms using thousands of factors to calculate a page's relevance to a given query".


"The beliefs and preferences of those who work at Google, as well as the opinions of the general public, do not determine or impact our search results," said Google.

"Individual citizens and public interest groups do periodically urge us to remove particular links or otherwise adjust search results. Although Google reserves the right to address such requests individually, Google views the integrity of our search results as an extremely important priority.

"Sometimes Google search results from the internet can include disturbing content, even from innocuous queries. We assure you that the views expressed by such sites are not in any way endorsed by Google."

We will, however, remove pages from our results if we believe the page (or its site) violates our Webmaster Guidelines, if we believe we are required to do so by law, or at the request of the webmaster who is responsible for the page.

Good for Google. How can a ‘search engine’ be held responsible for doing their job well. As soon as you start stuffing-around with search results, you compromise the search engine. I thought that would be obvious (you don’t have to like the returns but neither should you have boo hoo, petty PC tantrums).
 
Why go after the search engine anyway, go after the content.

Oh wait.... thats been happening a lot lately. :D

Yeah the liberal media are all running the story with the term "racially offensive image"......

Like Timeslive.co.za. Yet I recall their cartoonist Zapiro portraying black individuals as monkeys before. They really have no skaam. :erm:
 
Strange - when I query Google Images with michelle obama monkey there are as many pictures depicting George Bush as a monkey as there are of normal pictures of Michelle Obama. And there's one picture of her next to Chewbacca.

She's a very attractive lady though, and Obama is ripped like a mofo. I think they must be the most attractive President and First Lady since ... :erm: ...
