Setting up the 3G Card for Ubuntu Llinux

After 5 reboots today, I finally backed up my data, switched Windows off for the last time (i hope) jumped and installed Ubuntu Linux 5.04 on my laptop. I am a TOTAL Newbie to Linux (Really know zip), so the first thing I need to is get my datacard connected again. I have the Option Card. I've read the link Vodacom3g has posted, but :confused: its ways too complicated for me. Has anyone done this recently or have any advice they'd like to share :o
 
my limited linux exposure is around getting a cell phone connected via bluetooth but have read that the data card is configured as a network card.
your best bet would be to chat with Tazz_Tux, hes a wizard with linux
 
First thing you need is a windows box online in the same possie as your Linux box.

This will help you to solve your Linux newbie problems - simple as that.

I Kinda have that, I've borrowed another laptop with Windows on it and stuck the 3G card in this laptop(Windows) to have internet connectivity...guess it will get tricky when I have to switch the card around between the two machines..hmmm??
 
Yeah - guess so.
I'll bet your more a windows user tho ! - I know I am.
Linux is my server solution, Microsoft is my Desktop solution for the time being.

Hey agentpt,

First things first - did the install go 100% ? If so, do the following:

1) open a console - become root
2) run "tail -f /var/log/messages"
3) plug in the card
4) in another console - also as root type "modprobe usbserial vendor=0xaf0 product=0x5000"

You should see a couple of lines and then some stuff like /dev/ttyUSB0 - 1 and 2

Do an ls -l /dev/ttyUSB* and see if you get three lines back - If you do jump up and down !!!

Otherwise, ubuntu has fallen prey to the <NULL> bug, which I have pointed out to the dev's and awaiting a fix.

Post a message when you have do this and then we can take it one step more.
