Soweto's R452m water bill ignored

The City of Joburg appears to have double standards when it comes to cut-offs. This after it admitted that Soweto residents who default on their water bill do not get cut off.

However, The Star receives numerous calls from residents of the suburbs who are constantly being cut off - even when the account holder is in arrears for just a few days.

Soweto residents owe the council R452 million for water. Electricity to the area is mainly supplied by Eskom.

In the only figures available from Eskom from 2007, Soweto residents owed the parastatal R1.78 billion, with a payment level of 24 percent.

The City of Joburg said tenants who had water accounts owe R118m; owners who are account holders owe R225m.

The council has estimated that the balance of unpaid water bills of about R108m is owed by people not yet registered on the city's revenue system. But despite these huge bills, residents are not forced into paying by having their water cut off.

Only until people start moving out of Jo'burg to go stay in a place with better financial sense, or until the tax base is depleted.

anc promised us free water, free housing, free electricity, free ...........

it is democracy! it is the reason why we are voting (anc)[*1], why we pay? :D


note *1: democarcy = voting = voting anc = free services :eek:
 
Not worth it IMO, I rather stay where I stay then move to soweeto...
 
why move to soweto?

you just need to buy a house there, most of our stuff is there already :)

Some really upper class areas in Soweto...

The good thing about moving there, you will have more money to spend the rest of the month(FU Eskom), the bad thing you might be neighbours with a certain W Mandela :sick::eek:

Too true.

Another spinoff of living in Soweto is that your property is undervalued and you therefore pay much less rates and taxes :D

So if you are living in "previously" white areas they can screw you!!!

You are welcome to move to Soweto. Group Areas Act was abolished long time ago :D

The municipality can disconnect services but that does not mean that services will not be consumed as the locals would just reconnect for a small fee or for mahala...:D

if you live in a shack, then government should at least supply you with free water and lights.
if you live in one of the Soweto mansions and dont pay, then thats just iffy!
 
They cannot risk cutting the water to Soweto. Would you like to see the resulting protests? Destructive is not the word. :mad: We ratepayers are easy targets. :sick:

I would pay to see that.:o

We can make power if we ran out, water not so much. We do not live in a water rich country. Its not a right it's a fooking privilege. If not they should give it free too all.
