Holga/Luomo/toy cameras... any fans?

I have always known of these cameras and seen a bunch of pics (a long history of dating kooky indie girls will do that.)

I've always liked the effect and often approximated it by manipulating curves on the red and green channels or generally just messing around in PS, but recently I have wanted to get a Holga to carry around and steal light with.

I have ordered one from these dudes:

...can't wait to get my grubby paws on it and take it any/everywhere!

My old boy is fond of saying that the best camera in the world is the one you have with you and I wouldn't hesitate to take this thing to the beach; out at night etc. ...stuff I wouldn't be very keen on doing with my Nikon.

Anyone else a fan?

Thought about getting a Lomo but a) it's film, and b) it's easy to replicate in PS.

Hope you enjoy it though.
 
Personally I wouldn't mind one, but I wouldn't pay that much money for one :D

A Diana Mini would be nice:

Yea, PS can do a bunch of stuff but physically having the thing and being able to take it anywhere without a care in the world is awesome.

When you say film - you mean not digital or hard to come by?
AFAIK the Holga uses 120mm medium format which can be had for around R70 odd a roll.

Are you not a fan of chemical photography?

Film - its just such a schlep. Got to buy it, shoot it, develop it, print it, maybe even scan it and, after years of having to do it, if I ever have to step inside another darkroom it will be too soon.

I love digital. :D
 
Yea i have a Holga i muck about with - mainly mutltiple exposures and recently very trippy panorama's by not winding completeyl to the next frame.
 
Yea it use 120 film. I got a pile of it for free from a mate who has a cooler box full of the stuff from working as an assistant.
 
I would love a Lomo LCA as a carry around compact. They are tiny, and feel extremely solid. Costs waaay too much though.

Fair... but frankly I have been trying to figure out a way to hack together a makeshift darkroom (read: box I can walk into) at home so I can dick about with chemical again. Last time I did that was in high school, really got some cool effects back ion the day :)

The not winding all the way on thing can reall look cool but I find that when people do it intelligently so that it kind of tells a story it's generally a lot better than when it's just done 'because'.

Why is it that I never find myself in these situations?
I know someone who inherited an old satchel full of glass when his father in law passed away.

I am looking to buy a Lomography camera as a gift for someone (I myself know nothing about photography!). I'm just concerned as to the practicalities of the film?

Is 120 mm film easy to obtain? Any particular sources?

Where could one develop such film? It sounds naive to think that one could take it to a 1-stop-photo-shop at the local mall, but here's hoping? Do you need to send it to some specialised studio of some sorts?

Otherwise I suppose I could look at the Diana Mini which looks like it uses 35 mm.
 
I know ORMS in Cape Town sells and develops 120 film, no idea about Joburg side

Beith Digital in Wynberg usually has some. (...) Usually they also have Ilford - if they don't have something in stock they can usually get it. I've had good results processing film with them too but one set of scans came back a bit dodgy.
