Nominations for filling of vacancy on the Council of the Independent Communications Authority of South Africa (ICASA)
25 April 2005

Nominations are invited for persons to fill a vacancy in the Council of ICASA, as established in terms of the Independent Communications Authority of South Africa Act (No 13 or 2000).

A councillor will:

* Be committed to fairness, freedom of expression, openness and accountability
* Be representative of a broad cross-section of the population of the Republic
* Possess suitable qualifications, expertise and experience in the fields of, among others, broadcasting and telecommunications policy, engineering, technology, frequency band planning, law, marketing, journalism, entertainment, education, economics, business practice and finance, or any other related expertise or qualifications
* Be a South African citizen permanently resident in the Republic.

Written nominations must contain the full name and address of the person or organisation making the nomination, a signed acceptance of the nomination by the nominee and curriculum vitae of the nominee, providing at least the following information:

* Full name, identity document number and gender
* Contact address, telephone and telefax numbers, e-mail address
* Previous experience, quoting dates and organisations concerned
* Academic qualifications.

The Portfolio Committee on Communications will decide on a shortlist of candidates to be interviewed and, upon completion of the interviews, present its findings to the National Assembly for recommendation to the President.

Who would want to work for a company who's firmly under government's thumb? Certainly not me.

no offence to him (great guy and all), first issue is his age is a major factor against him getting it.
At the end of the day they are looking for someone who knows a boardroom, not a techie.
Rather get the CEO of a sympathetic ISP in there.

I'd second Ant's nomination.

Also, William Stucke (of ZANet), Graham Leggett, Bretton Vine and possibly Aragon Gouveia.

Not sure what use little old me would be compared to them ;-). But I'm not a techie!

Its a job [read burden] that I would not want to wish on anyone that I know - not unil ICASA is truly independent of her Poisonous Ivyness...
