For the past 9 months now I have been completely addicted to an online virtual reality called Second Life.

Dont even care about downloading anymore, lol. Practically all my bandwidth and a whole lot more goes into the hours of enjoyment I find in Second Life. One thing does disappoint me though, how few South Africans i find in there :(. Yeah some would call it an online game sure, but games have a goal, there is a winner and a loser. There is an end!!! Second Life is more an alternative, existing in a world created by you and people around you just like you. A world of social interaction on a 3D scale. Yes it eats bandwidth like a mofo sure and mayb this has restricted the South African community from finding and exploring this world.

So this thread......
1. Anybody who wants information
2. Anybody who has questions
3. Anybody who has been there (your views/experiences/feelings)
4. Anybody who is in there (mayb we shud meet inworld)

From what I've heard. You need a 8 mbps line minium.. So for us Saffers, 4 mbps is required..

No man, not so true, you can get in and play on a minimum 512kbps connection, may not be tooooooooo grand but def possible

damn, I'm sitting with 384k line don't think I'll make it

yeah you may just actually, was connected on a 256kbps digichilli account earlier today. it sucked a little but i was there, roflmao

If you can ping Second Life with a +-600ms response time you can play quite nicely, but even goin upto 900ms will still do the trick.

DWIGHT: Second Life is not a game, its a multi-user virtual environment. It doesnt have points or scores, it doesn't have winners or losers.

JIM: Oh it has losers..

Don't think about playing second life if you only have a 3 or 5 Gb cap. It sucks down data faster than a WUG.

Heh, at least on a WUG it's free.

I played/used/whatever Second Life for a few months on a 3G connection, did fine with the bandwidth for the first couple of months, then went mental on the third month, and ignored all the overcap warnings from VMC. Stopped playing it after receiving a rather large 3G account.

Tried it recently after getting ADSL, does not work nicely on a 384k connection, will try it again when I upgrade to 4Mb, maybe.

I tried it for a while. Was fine on my 384k.

Got over it VERY fast.

I tried it probably 3 years ago, but couldn't get into it. Maybe I should try to get on again and up the SA numbers.

Seems as if I can quite my job and play second life full time ;)

Recently built a skybox (loft that floats seemlessly in the air) for the owners of one of SL's busiest strip clubs (Intimate Desirez). This Endeavour took me between 3/4 hrs, on and off, to complete. Has functioning lighting and a fireplace that can be switched on and off. Charged them $12'000.00 Linden Dollars, which equates to about $46.00usd, or ZAR 328.00 I had fun doing it, and it made me money. For the same group of people I also redesigned 2 stages @ $2500 Linden Dollars each and a dancefloor @ $3000 Linden Dollars. so from these guys I've made about ZAR 546.00, in about just over 4 hours, pays half my adsl costs for an uncapped account. :D

The other thing Trix, what SL was 3 yrs ago, and what it is now is like s*@t and sugar. So much has changed, graphics, skins hair, the quality of your virtual clothes and and textures.

365ms for Washington ping servers.

More than good enough for SL, assume you running a 4Mb line there Nokkie. Also ping Canada, cos SL servers are based in Canada, not America.

If anyone who reads through this forum does decide to make an appearance in SL, lemme know IM me inworld, Riaz Loopen or PM me here and lemme know what your avatar name is inworld.;)

yep am Duff Tremor in SL. See ya'll around. I run 4mb and all is just fine, pity i use my laptops k@k gfx card mostly though.

hey!

I just found out of second lifes existence and im impressed by the fact that I can make REAL money from it! I have a Telkom ADSL 4mb line, however my International is unfortunately limited to 3 gig which I share =( wish they had local servers for South Africa, as I have span local cap. Before I begin the second life journey I would like to know how much cap per hour it uses on the second life servers??? Also apparently you can't buy land on a free account... can you still work though? If I did buy an account how much would that be monthly? Also do you have to use a credit card, can't you use debit??? who exactly pays you and is it garaunteed???

Thank you for your help who ever you are =)
