I haven't fired up the PS2 in about 6 months, just no time :( don't think I will be in a rush to the next one

Interesting - the Xbox 360 is touted as having 1 teraflop and sony come out with 2 teraflops - I'm sure that doesn't really equate to twice the performance, but it's something for microsoft to worry about.

Another thing - Source is backware compatible right the way back !
Meantime, we still don't know if the Xbox 360 will be compatible with the Xbox.

Hmm, I'd say Sony have a winner on thier hands here ?
Hows the video card ! :-

The RSX is more powerful than two GeForce 6800 Ultra video cards

Wow ! :D

Let the war begin !
This may finally tempt me to enter the world of "the console" again :D

I suspect WoW is part of this :D

The Playstation 3 looks like a winner, although to win in Europe and US, they need to have a proper online gaming system as more games will take advantage of this. If the Xbox 360 can win hands down on Live, they will put up quite a big challenge.

I dought it - I guess they figured we were too small a market for the Xbox and that Sony had already cornered it with the Playstation.

Who knows ?

I'm just digging these consoles as a replacement for lots of home media stuff as well as gaming etc. - being able to watch DVD's, play CD's, surf the web etc. all via one device sounds fantastic, rather than being lumbered with multiple devices.

Part of the problem... yeah. Wonder if they will release a MMORPG for PS3.

guys the xbox will kill the ps3 in terms of graphics

That's an unqualified statement, we won't know til both machines have been released. Also graphics are not the be all and end all of console gaming. Sony has been successful because the game developers have more experience in developing games for the PS resulting in more playable games IMHO. :D

I for one thought M$ shot themselves in the foot when thet tried to strong arm developers into creating games soley for XBox.

Why ?

How can you look at the two consoles specifications and come up with a sweeping statement like that ?

If you want an Xbox 360, there's a guy on prophecy (www.prophecy.co.za) who is importing 50 of them at launch. He's only charging shipping plus cost price apparently. Go have a look..

ps3 i wanna

A friend told me launch price for ps3 2006 +-R6500.Far more competitive than xboss bill :D .PLUs i love grand turismo 5....next year baby..next year :D

I'm really excited by this - for the first time I can see a reason to buy a game console !

Never really saw the need before as PC's have been my source for games for 10 years +

But these devices are basically PC/Console/Multimedia powerhouses of note !

Agreed bb_matt, now that consoles are more than just gaming machines there's more reason to get one. Price will be the determining factor though, I'm guessing the games are going to be hellish expensive!

As for relative performance there is no way to tell at this point, comparing teraflops is a complete waste of time. These are THEORETICAL numbers and we all know that in practice no machine reaches anywhere near its theoretical specs. Both consoles will be beasts and I think the determining factor will be which one brings the best all round experience to the table.
