Just curious...I've got a few big projects ahead of me, so I just may have the cash to get myself a decent antenna...
 
If I lived in Stellenbosch I would join your mesh.....come on people. Its offerslike this that MAKE it all happen!!!

What are the range of these antennas? Could they reach the northern border of kraaifontein from Stellenbosch?
 
I would be interested, but I do not have the cash atm :(
Depending on what type of antenna you get, the range can go to 20km+ (with reduced speed the further you go of course)

Sounds awesome, will I be able to connect from welgevonden. And will DC++ be on the mesh.
 
I dunno...depends on how many people are interested...I'm in the girls hostels area :D

I started a project pahe quite a while ago...but didn't get a good response...

If this thing happens, I'll be prepared to put up a linux server running a DC++ hub, for the mesh users, and in time, if the infrastructure is up and running, and any good, we may just convince the university to allow registered students to connect to their network...they could use MAC filtering to control that or something...

Hmmm, so how much distance is between your potential node and where i am? Will we be able to cover that area between us? and would anybody be able to relay the mesh to durbanville and bellville?

I don't have much experience with this sort of thing, but distance is one thing, I think the main problem would be line of sight.
Compl33t, is the Esperanza node on nodedb yours? Are you in contact with the other nodes listed there?
 
Yep, the Esperanza node is mine, but atm I don't have coverage outside of my flatblock. I'm planning on getting a grid antenna as soon as I can afford it. I already have the building owner's permission to mount an antenna on the roof...it's a two story building...but which way I point it all depends on where the closest other node is.
 
If I still lived there you would have my vote!

How would that antenna work over the hill to Welgevonden though? :confused:

Anyway...maybe we could get Snowball involved? They have the infrastructure in place anyways...maybe they could help with a community mesh? They can surely find a way to filter who gets to access the internet (paying customers) and who doesn't? Should I email them and ask?
 
Hmmm, money seems to be the problem, plus obviously my total lack of experience with this type of thing. I am in IT though and would LOVE to try these things out!

Anybody have an estimate on what it would cost?
 
R2000? That all? Then why arent we all popping up nodes like crazy??? That would be money well spent!

Right, now the other problem... Is it worthwhile for me to set up a node in order to link up to Stellenbosch or Durbanbille/Bellville? Prolly too far away... Thoughts anyone? How big can we make this?
