Reporting my phone as stolen.

My Omnia has taken the high road.

It's Vodafone branded, but used an MTN prepaid sim.

I take it that I report it to VC?
Do I need a case number first to have it blocked/blacklisted?

Take it to whom you have the contract.
Yes, you do need to report it at the police station.

How was it stolen?
 
Seen this before, you're going to have hassles i believe. If you have the proof of purchase, that'll help alot. As you use an MTN sim in it, it wouldn't pick up on the Vodacom network as ever being active. Hence the proof of purchase or the box it came in itself being of a big help there.

The average idiot behind the counter doesn't think to ask for that, so take it along to be on the safe side and get them to blacklist it for you.

Never had a contract with the phone.
Bought on Gumtree about 11 months ago.

Mmm will check with the guy that I bought it from on gumtree, hope he still stays in the same place.

I have the IMEI# of the phone, but don't know if that'll be enough.

The IMEI should be enough to report it stolen - if the insurance company balks at least you can insist on 11 months worth of premiums being refunded.
 
Sorry to hear bou the phone mate. Here is the procedure.

1. Goto the police station and report it as stolen. Get a case number.
2. Contact the MTN helpdesk and give them the case number they will intern give you a reference number amd blacklist the phone and block tour sim.

I have had several phones stolen it totally sucks aslong as you have the unique network identifier IMEI# they can blacklist the phone on the spot. Does not really matter if it's Vodafone branded or MTN they have the same ability to blacklist your phone.

This totally sucks mate
 
What we need is a "hidden" application on each and every phone, which cannot be bypassed or disabled. Once enabled, it will cause the phone to emit an high-pitched squeal every few seconds :twisted: :D

Or a shocking high-voltage experience :twisted: :D

The operators would balk at this - stolen phones are still income generating phones.
 
When I went to report a stolen phone a few months ago, the police refused to open a case if I didn't first have it blacklisted and had an ITC number.

This was also a Vodafone phoned that was used on MTN. I tried to get MTN to blacklist it, but was unsuccessful - not because they refused to do it, but just because they are incompetent in general.

I ended up having to abandon the attempt to open a case, it just wasn't possible.

Hope that you have better luck.

This is why RICA won't work, there is just too much incompetence around.
 
Well I'll see if I get any joy out of the copshop tomorrow.

Realised that my darn phone has all of my web accounts on there, luckily not been hacked into.

Changed all of my passwords now.
 
I'm in a different situation.

I gave my phone to a guy who was supposed to repair it. He has since disappeared while being in contact with him for a month or so.. I have the original box etc it came in. Will they be able to track down the phone with the phones' gps?

You need some remote software in order to to do that.

One of the mobile operators may be able to triangulate the phone with GSM towers, but don't know how often they actually go that far to do it.

Fsck, don't know what phone to get next.

And I don't want to go the contract route.

So maybe it's time to hunt for the HTC Hero or a BB Bold now.

Who? Vodacom/MTN? They'd have little interest in doing that.

Ah crap. That sucks. Yeah go for the Hero :P Getting one soon as well. Is there free software that one could track the Hero if it goes missing? I suppose not getting the phone back ain't a great loss. It was a Nokia N80.

Ja, I was once at police station and overheard cop telling lady and her daughter that came in to report stolen phone that they need the IMEI or they can't open a case or get a case number. And sent them back home.
