Hi,

I am wondering, is there anyone out there that is subscribed to Free To Air?

If you are and are happy with their service, Could I perhaps come and visit you at your place? I Would be willing to pay to see the FTA Decoder/Satellite in action, and if you could tell me about a reputable dealer I would be even more grateful.


I'm stronkly considering making the switch between DSTV and FTA.

FTA (Free to Air) the the normal channels, SABC, eTV, BTV, Radio Channels and other Religious channels.

FTA is not a "company" like dstv.

there's more,from other sats of course...and from Feb 2010,there'll be even more.
 
MNET blocks a lot of FTA channels. When I got my HDPVR I only did the updates after 2 days, and had a whole lot of channels that disapeared after doing the updates.
 
you can get satellite decoders and receive some channels free to air if you get the right frequency and satellite access. channels are pretty arb though. not much available.

Please give me some hope JustAsk. What kind of satelite should I get to break away from DSTV?

Just need sport and current affairs programs. Travel type channels would also be appreciated.

How can anyone run a proper broadcasting service with money from ads only?

Don't know what you're referring to.

IMO none of the TV broadcasters in SA can be considered to be running 'proper [TV] broadcasting services' and they all rely on advertising revenue, although the SANBC gets additional money from tax payers, while MonoChoice milks its hostages dry, and eTV bores its viewers to near death just like the SANBC and MonoChoice.

You don't know what I'm referring to? Did you read the article that you linked to?

Anyway, those guys didn't really get of the ground. Multichoice runs a proper service, at a cost. It would not have been possible otherwise.
 
I've been watching FTA channels for years. I have a large motorised C-band antenna, and I have relatives with motorised KU-band antennas. A decent FTA decoder is under R 1000.

You can buy everything from spacetv locally.

If you're looking for DSTV type programming in FTA format, forget about it, it doesn't exist. If however you're looking for something extra, it's there.

There's a huge amount of multi-cultural stuff on FTA. On Apstar (78.5 E I think), there's a ton of Indian and Greek Channels, and so on.

On Nilesat, there are FTA movie channels + a lot of Arabic Content.

Most of the stuff on FTA is NOT English. There is BRAZIL, ANGOLA, PORTUGAL, and MOZAMBIQUE also on FTA.

All depends on what you're looking for. There are NO premium sport channels on FTA. FTA is paid for by the Government of the country you are tuning into - this means SABC type content at best.
