ok this mite be a bit of a wuss topic but i was just thinking to when i was quite a bit younger and how scary i used to find some of those games...

well thinking back as some of the most memorable, and scary games ive every played the following come to mind:

1. Dungeon and Dragons on the atari, OMG that freaked me out, there was this monster, made up of about 4 pixels, that used to appear and random times in the game...flip,l i can feel those chills again! ahhaha

2. Doom 1, that was also freaky back then...

3. Resident Evil 2, When i first got that game i was expecting the usual kill everyone on the screen type effort. I can still remember sitting on my bed playing it when those hands broke through the wall in the police station! OMG, i remember just turning the console of and not playing for a week

Phantasmagoria way back and Doom III lately esp if I play alone at night with the headphones on.

Silent Hill 4 and then Clive Barkers Undying

Doom was not scarey. Agreed I did jump once or twice from shock, but not scary. Hell Silent Hill 4 made me stair at the door after I went to bed incase something came in.
More psycological scary than fright scary (ala Doom).

Alien vs Predator, especially when you have surround sound and youre playing the poor marine. That little ping-ping of the motion detector sends chills down your spine.

Obelix

Silent Hill 1 on PS1. That game had heeps of atmosphere and really gave me some eerie feelings playing it at night. There were like little black demons walking/crawling around in this abondoned school building *shiver*.

Doom 3 or Half-life 2 in a dark room with the speakers nice n loud, subwoofers on full tilt.. nice.. even better when hung over :)

I'd also have to say Clive Barkers Undying. The first Unreal game was also quite scary with good sound, and Quake (the original, when the word "Quake" actually had something to do with the story line).

Apparently System Shock 2 was pretty scary, but I never played it.

Hmm, Phantasmagoria was pretty scary, although I was a kid at the time so playing it now would prob be a laugh. ESP the the end of the first one where you were chased by the giant monster. Actually does anyone know where I could get it from?

Silent Hill 1 is high ranking on the teenage trauma, g/f and I spent a week playing that game day and night trying to figure out every possible trick. Till this day the vibration on a PS controller can scare me ;)

Actually all 4 Silent hills are pretty scary, its because you know something is coming, the radio static just keeps you on your toes. I have to agree with Dfantom, its not the fights but rather the way it messes with your mind. The alternate worlds and jumping from riddle/puzzles to certain death. And that damn heartbeat pulsing through your hands while the radio buzzes away and you know that there are 2 zombie dogs waiting round the corner. And just then your cell phone will ring and scare the hell out of you.

I second Undying, especially the first "boss", the daughter I think. She seriously freaked me out, I ran away from her for about 10 minutes before settling down enough to kill her ;)

Doom 3 can be quite quite intense. the game itself isn't brilliant but the atmosphere is incredible. They dynamic lighting and shadows make a HUGE difference. Most of the monsters are quite unsettling, especially the Cherub (the baby looking thing with wings).

Going WAY back, one of the games that freaked me out was Spear of Destiny (based on the original Wolfenstein 3D engine). I dropped a load in the last level when it all seems quiet and suddenly you hear this demon calling out of nowhere "Do your best human!"... probably wouldn't be scary today but I was young then ;)

Oh and who could forget "Alone in the Dark"!

Uh, Freecell. All those cards and you have to find the right places for them and then they keep a track record of your score and tell you that each game is most likely solvable - i.e if you can't work it out then you're a dumbass....That **** is scary!!!!

:D

Does EVERY girl on the planet play Freecell? You're like to get bitten here Debbie, we're a pack of rabid gamers :)

Lol Perdition, I was just being facetious! But to answer your question - yeah I don't think I know any girls with a computer who DON'T play Freecell.

If you need a serious answer to the question at hand, then I would have to say Quake (2 I think it was). In fact, any first person shooter game when there is surround sound is actually too scary for me to play. My ex used to play all those PS2 games and I would get scared just watching. Especially when dodgy people jump out with machine guns.

agreed, Phantasmagoria was right up there if you leave the various FPS out of this. Never got around to the sequel though. If you look closely at this pic of my setup , you'll see Phantasmagoria sitting on top of the box, between the left speaker and the top wheels of the r/c car :D :D

I'm big into the adventure game genre (ie: 'story based games') although few of them get made these days - here's my list of scary games - at least some of them were scary at the time :)
Doom1, Gabriel Knight Beast Within, I Have No Mouth And I Must Scream, Dark Eye, Sanatarium, HR Giger's Darkseed, Phantasmagoria, Barkers Undying, System Shock 2..

Oops ... forgot that classic ... playing late at night.

The game opens on a derelict spaceship with you having been awoken from cryosleep with all the crew having being turned into mindless killer zombies.

Very eerie and everything is rather dark with lighting used to very good effect and as you move around and you just hear them say "joinnnnn usssss" over and over as they close in on you.

You did not miss much as it was pretty crap as they made it some sort of life action video game and the original team did not work on the sequel.

They still get made but you have to look for them very hard ... mainly European developers are still doing the genre.

Have played "Syberia" and now busy with "The Moment of Silence" ... not too shabby.
