Getting loads of voice messages, losing reception!

Hi Guys,

I currently have an iPhone 3gs (05.11.07 baseband) running the latest v3.1.2 firmware on the Vodacom network.

FIRSTLY: I have noticed that on occassion my phone loses 3G reception, and drops down to EDGE, and then GPRS, and then ALL TOGETHER ... for about 30 seconds, and then gets reception again. (While standing still)

SECONDLY: I have also noticed that I am receiving more than my fair share of voice messages, and people say that my phone is OFF, when it is plainly ON, sitting on my desk, and looks like it has good reception!!!

My girlfriend is starting to think that something is up because "my phone is always off"... :-/

Are any other users experiencing similar problems ?!?!?!

Yeah I get that alot too. I've got a N95, and I'm on MTN. The problems started about a 1 - 1.5 years ago. Before that it was all good. I know lots of other people this happens to too, all on various networks. Get the same problem watching the signal go from HSDPA (3.5G) to 3G to EDGE/GPRS.

The problem is definitely with the networks, and not your phone. Vodacom and MTN really suck. I believe Cell C isn't as bad. The towers are all over-congested - a congested tower means that the signal you get from the tower will be weaker than if the tower was less congested. And the backhaul capacity isn't too grand either, thanks to Telkom, and the operators sitting on the asses instead of self-providing the first opportuntity they had...

I also experience the same problem. I think its more a network issue than a iphone issue. Before I got the iphone this use to happen alot on my N95 as well as N81.

Are you guys talking about the First issue or the Second issue?

On CellC prepaid, both my wife and I

There have been instances when SMS'es I've sent to my wife would arrive between 5 to 10 hours later.

I don't do voice calls a lot, but the few that I've done either got dropped straightaway, or I managed to connect.

But never any voicemail message or the such so far.
