wanna upgrade to 512. speed question

I am currently on the 256k package and all things considered i am pretty happy with it. (i have low expectations)

However, i am considering upgrading the 512 package.

Currently i get limited to around 8k when downloading larger files. Will this increase to 16k?

Can someone on the 512 package let me know what the speeds are like?

128k = 16kb/s
256k = 32kb/s
512k = 64kb/s

Now, why would you pay more for a service that you can get if you were on the 128k package with the hopes of it only increasing to 16kb/s????

This is ludricous man! You should be getting 16kb/s on the 128k package already. Your download speed for what you're paying should be 32kb/s!!!!!!!!

I hear you. But I am stuck between a rock and a hard place. I need to download software releases from my headoffice in the UK and i need it to happen as quickly as possible. Sadly ADSL was not ready in my area so I had to go the wireless route.

I'll just get the vasoline ready......
 
hmmm. I dunno.

Having read the Iburst forum i don't think its a good idea. Seems that they are having more problems than ever. Also the 3 gig limit is laugh, so i think i;m better off with Sentech till my contract expires and I get ADSL sorted out (now in my area)
 
Stick to what you've got. Download Free Download Manager (http://www.freedownloadmanager.org) and use its scheduler feature. setup 2 entries.
1. Start all downloads every 1min.
2. Stop all downloads when speed less than or equal 12000BPS during 1min

Works fine for me. I download all the new OpenOffice (+-84MB) releases in just over 45min. If I had a full 32K/sec I would get around 1.875MB a minute. Using FDM, Im getting around 1.86MB/min. Not to bad taking everything into account.

Is there a magic number between 1 and 2? i.e. Pause for say 10secs and then start again? Cause I guess there is a limit before the "throttle machine" resets itself...

roddyp, i'd definately recommend ADSL and an Uncapped account for you then, especially if you need something reliable and fast (and when I say reliable and fast, I mean 99% uptime and never goes slow and then fast or need any special workaround to do)

It took me almost 16 months to realise that wireless will never provide me with what I need. And seeing as Telkom is releasing 1 meg ADSL in August, I have the option for even FASTER access. With ping times you'd swop your granma for
 
unfortunately not. The min value at the moment is 1 minute. Maybe they'll make the scheduler more powerful in future releases
 
Luke, in my Sentech experience of almost 11 months, I can say that this is not just international speeds, but local as well. I was on the 512k package and had worse speeds than most 128k users.

If things has since then changed, then good. But I'd certainly not think of upgrading.
 
My local speeds are decent. Downloading is not throttled and averages 24-32K/sec
 
Like I said many months ago on this forum, if I wanted good local speeds and crappy international speeds, I'd get ADSL. And recent developments allowed me to get an uncapped account for a decent price, meaning, no crappy international speeds above 3 gigs of usage.

And guess what? I got ADSL.

If a wireless technology can offer me nothing better (not even compared to price) than a much better technology could... why would I go with the wireless technology? I'd be stupid. And I don't like to waste my money.

Trust me, you (if you werent here yet and don't know TheRodent, sorry) should have listened to TheRodent a long time ago and got ADSL. Hell, if you ordered it last year you might have had it by now.

I had to get the techie to do illegal things to some poor sap's line so I can piggy back off of it to get mine... how far would you go a few months down the line when you wake up?

Then again, some people are still happy with 56k dialup speeds and still believe that a public holiday is call more time. Not to mention, the lady I rent from, still thinks Telkom is part of the Post Office... no one has a point doesn't he?
 
Oh and btw, if you get an uncapped ADSL account on a 512k line, it would cost you around the same it would (about a R100 cheaper if I'm not mistaken) than Sentech's 512k. You get decent throughput (no 16kb/s for the first minute crap) and you get pings in the low 40ms to local servers, and 320ms to international servers.

Not only that, packet loss is a thing of the past, and there is CONSISTANCY between pings, you don't suddenly find a 2450ms ping between a bunch of 150ms pings with some packet loss and then find a tower went down and you've lost all connectivity. No ways, worst case scenario, lighting hits your line and/or the exchange blows up.

Then again (as I've mentioned, and yes, if you understood, you'll notice what my point is by now) some people still believe Telkom is a part of the Post office...
 
Well, originally coming from ADSL, i am certainly going to go back to in a few months. My contact with Sentech is almost at an end, so once done i will go back for sure.
And who knows? by then Telkom may have dropped the line cost altogether. Then again, George Bush might also admit to being a twat.
But hey, there always hope....

@ JayT: I have followed your instructions using Free Download Manager.

You, sir, have just turned my slower-than-a-modem MyWireless 128 into true broadband. You are now officially my hero. I bow before thee.
 
ahhaahha, true broadband doesn't need a workaround. btw, broadband is considered anything 512k and up.

but i get what you mean :P
 
Yeah, you're right. Still, I'm now getting a full 128k worth of bandwidth. As we speak I'm busy downloading a 60MB file and my speed is pegged at around 13 - 14K per second.

WooHoo!!!
 
haha, and guess what. I got a call from NoWire. They giving me next month free of charge. Apparently the call I logged last month for slow speeds during business hours was taken seriously by sentech. Next month is now free. Im not complaining as I've already used 17GB this month and Im not using the connections during the days *g*.
