Getting snowball wireless internet access installed tommorow, dont have line of sight but hows this, with a grid antenna i get 100% signal strength through trees.... Now thats amazing. The dude said if 110% was possible I would most likely get that... The thing is i am only like 500m away from the Highpoint...

Will keep you posted as to how the service is... Cant wait to get off bloody TELKOM. (TELSCUM)
 
expect no peer 2 peer, decent browsing afaik and decent local gaming.. more than that you will probably not get.
 
For R250.00 per month

HA, I can live with only browsing and internet, dont need p2p... Just take my portable Hdd to my buddy in res and he like fulls up 80gigs in less than 30mins... All i want is browsing and e-mail... and ftp so i can update my website
 
Got it installed.... INT badwidth little slow but with the dsl-saix.cache proxy it works a bit better hey
 
Slow, if it is at least a bit faster than dailup it would be fine for the time being, what speed do you get, what did the equipment (startup cost you? )What equipment did you get with it (contract or no contract)

does ftp works, then I can let my buddies setup an ftp and I can dl 24/7 from it, (almost like p2p)

any other info much appreciated.
 
Ok I saw it is from 1999 installation, no contract, I wonder if they will cut the cost if you want to use your own modem
 
INT is like 56K modem. so is Local. AFAIK if you setup (is only the equipment costs) so if you own your own equipment, modem all you have to do is call them. tell them you pointed your wlan at there highpoint (on top of papagaaiberg) and they will connect you in a matter of seconds.. very good service. NO p2p though, ftp protocol works perfectly. You also get short bursts up to 20K but then throttled down to like 6kb to 7kb but ya they pretty cool.. Just want adsl speed at 512k cant handle anything slower after JHB.

they also have like an acceptable use policy no cap. but they say 15GB is too much per month. They monitor your bandwidth.

what modem do you have or what do they give you? If I can use a linksys wireless access point router, with a 22 dbi antenna, then it would be ok. then it can be used as a wireless ap or switch for my home network too., for example if I can use that jawug kit to connect costing about R2k.

or do you need a MODEM as such??

The Jawug kit comprises of a linksys router, which is essentially your modem or gateway. Also very configurable, as it is linux based, but thats a whole other story.
