There's only one RPG that was truly great in my opinion: The Ultima 7 Series. Not before and never since have I experienced the level of freedom, storyline-focus and fun of play that U7 provides. Its the kind of game that sucks you in and spits you out 8 hours later.

The games that try to pass themselves off as RPG's these days all focus on combat rather than puzzle solving and storyline. So here's a list of the 5 RPG's I consider to be the best. Please note that of those I only consider number one to be worthy of the title RPG.

1. Ultima 7 Part 1 and 2
2. Fallout 1
3. Ultima 8
4. Dune 1
5. Baldur's Gate

I also love adventure games, especially the old Sierra ones (Space Quest, Kings Quest, Quest for Glory, Black Cauldron and so on) but also games like Dragonsphere, Rex Nebular, Gabriel Knight, Beneath a Steel Sky, Innocent Until Caught, Simon the Sorcerer, Legend of Kyrandia... wow too many to name really. Does anybody else think that they made much better games back in the day?

Name some of the gems that still bring a smile to your face when you think of playing them... can be Adventure or RPG's.

I think EVERYONE who grew up on the Sierra games will agree that nothing today comes close to the enjoyment of those games. In those days the developers concentrated more on great gameplay and storyline than the graphics engine. I'm not saying that you don't get great games now but in general if you bought a Sierra game you knew you were going to enjoy it without needing to read a review.

All the games you listed are awesome. Let's also not forget the Lucas Arts games... Day of The Tentacle, Indiana Jones, Sam and Max, Monkey Island, The Dig and Full Throttle.

I also enjoyed Laura Bow (Sierra I think), Conquest of the Longbow, Rise of the Dragon and Willy Beamish

Original Sierra quest games and Lucas games definately up there in the hall of great games. But for an RPG/Aventure Deus Ex 1 and Morrowind are the two best (in that order). Deus Ex 2 sucked so much it hurt.

I wouldn't really classify Diablo as an RPG. It's more a hack and slash dungeon crawler. U7 is in a totally different class, completely storyline driven. You can interact with almost all the objects: break down doors, bake break, take a chair from a house put it in the middle of a forest and sit on it. Anything. Your character and party gets hungry, cold, drunk, tired etc. There's a full weather system. Imagine Baldurs Gate but with outdated graphics, a hell of a lot more freedom and a much more involving story.

The game isn't about slashing stuff at all, and you can bypass most situations in a different way than fighting. So yeah, I'm not a big fan of Diablo. To me all the game involves is slash stuff, go to town, heal, slash stuff, go to town, heal.

I absolutely loved Diablo because it was great for its time, but only played through it once. I also only played through Diablo 2 once as it was also pretty much just wash, rinse, repeat.

Like you TMoose I also enjoy a more involved storyline and environment interaction but unfortunately the hardcore RPG's just take far too long, I just don't have time anymore to dedicate to them :(

I don't have a problem with Diablo, as an action game, but what I hated was that they tried to pass it off as a Role Playing Game. If Diablo is a RPG then so is Quake and Postal.

In Diablo you have absolutely no freedom to explore. The entire game world is a dungeon, each one filled with more monsters than the last. The "quests" are things you would have achieved regardless of weather you had known that there was a quest and usually just involves killing some new big monster anyway. Completely linear.

There's no sub-plots, no weather systems, nothing. That's in stark contrast with U7 for example where you have several different modes of transport (flying carpet, teleportation, horse and wagon and ship) that you could use to visit several continents. The quests can be completed in any order and you have complete freedom to explore (you can read about a magic item hidden in the mountains in a book, and then actually go and find it for example).

So if I have to measure Diablo against RPG standards, then its quite possibly the worst RPG ever designed... but personally I don't see it as a RPG, as there is no actual character development or role playing involved, and as an action game its fine... though I suspect you'll wear out several mice during the course of the game, especially the second one where you have to tripple click some monsters to death and hundreds of them lurk and respawn around every corner.

I've started playing the first Gothic, and I must admit that so far I quite like it. There's a few things that bothers me in terms of the interface and loading times, but the rest is all good. How does the second one compare to the first?

Gothic 2 sure looked nice, graphically. Played it for like 20 minutes, uninstalled and never got around to it again. Bloody tertiary studies!

I have one alltimesake supremely fun quest game, Kings Quest 3... there is alot of others I rate very high aswell, but whenever I think instantly about the game that made me love games it must be Kings Quest 3 :)

The Kings Quest games were classics. Those old Sierra games are what made me love computers. I remember being pissed off at Space Quest 4 for selling out and using the mouse. I quite liked typing the commands personally.

Ah.. those were the days. The golden era of gaming. This Gothic game is really growing on me. Definitely one of the best RPG's I've played in the last few years.

Space Quest 4 is one of my all time favourites! Darn I just wanna dig it out right now and start playing again but too much work to do :(

Definitely, I was so pissed off with the introduction of the mouse. These quest games actually worked as a typing tutor back then ;-)
