Gunmen have fired on a bus carrying Togo's football team to the Africa Cup of Nations in Angola, wounding several players, competition officials say.

They say robbers shot at the bus in Congo, near the Angolan border. There are reports of serious injuries.

The Africa Cup of Nations is due to start on Sunday.

Togo's first game is to be played on Monday in the oil-rich territory of Cabinda, where rebels have been fighting for independence.

The Togolese team includes Manchester City striker Emmanuel Adebayor and Aston Villa's Moustapha Saliphou.

Those wounded also include team doctors. The identities of the injured are not known.

The BBC understands Adebayor is not among them.

My condolences to the Togo team firstly, such a terrible thing to happen to anybody. But in all sincerity, that place has militia crawling all over the place from the recent war who'll shoot at anything. Wasn't a very wise decision to hold a match in Angola tbh the place is so unstable :(

I fear a backlash! Angola = Africa = South Africa....

Why the hell would any one decide to have any sporting event there in the first place, the decision makers must be held accountable for this.

ambush those a-hole :erm:

A bit off topic but I drove past the stadium here in Cabinda (Not bad looking I must admit) the other day and I was wondering where they would house all the fans from out of town. I didn't really see anything along the lines of guest houses, hotels, B&B's in the immediate area. Maybe they are located off the main road.

Ya the hull manager says the world cup must be moved to australia.

We have hosted many comps and nothing like has happened before, it is not our fault the stupid organizers of the AFCON decide a country like angola is a great place to play soccer.

Once again it can only be Stupid people who decide angola is a good place to play a big comp.

Agreed, there is only one country capable of handling safe tournaments on this continent and we have a proven track record. The Hull manager can kiss my ass if he thinks he knows better, clearly geography isn't a strong point in the UK.

In much the same way England is not Bosnia (despite being on the same continent-ish), South Africa is not Angola you ill-educated tosser. London is the same city that had terror attacks, yet I hear no one calling for the Olympics to be moved to Sydney.

Yet from 1959 up to now the country with the proven track record only host it once, and all other 26 times it was hosted in the other unsafe African countries.

How many of those other 26 tournaments were unsafe?

nice question man

Defender Serge A***po, who plays for Romanian club Vaslui, was hit by two bullets and lost a lot of blood in the attack in Angola's oil-rich territory of Cabinda, which is due to host seven matches.

Going to be an interesting tournament for those seven matches, i hope for the teams playing the shooters F up again and shoot the luggage bus again.

Surely they should move the matches?
