The 2% decline in the matric pass rate is cause for serious concern. The education minister, Angie Motshekga, had this to say: "To say we are unhappy is an understatement. This is rather depressing as many people have worked extra hard to ensure an improvement."

Her comment is not reassuring. If anything it dismisses the many problems that have befallen public education in South Africa.

For one thing, some people have not been working "extra hard". I'm talking here about the teachers who were absent from class, who went on strike and who failed their pupils when it came to matric.

Those who have the money - mostly whites - have abandoned the public education system for excellent private schools that deliver brilliant results and equip children to compete for tertiary education positions and jobs anywhere in the world.

And don't kid yourself, many of those who can't afford it are leaving this country for jobs abroad to secure the education of their children. It's a major factor when such a decision is made.

Not even the National Party of BJ Vorster could have come up with a more cunning plan to perpetuate racial inequity.

Oh, the irony! Well done to the ANC, you did what the National Party never could!

well the teachers in Sa suck most of the time.. at my sister's school(semi-private) the teacher couldn't really teach maths as she didn't do 1st yr pure maths at a university level(had to send her to extra classes and i had to help where i could without pulling out my hair in frustration as she didn't know the basics, had already gained bad habits from teacher too e.g. taking shortcuts even tho her understanding of how it works(longer and shorter version) & is dodgy at best etc).. so yah.. blame the ruling party and see where that gets you.

The problem remains the same even if administration changes.. not enough REAL maths and science teachers in the country and i think the only way we will EVER get this right is by dong something that will make people freak out if they dnt give a damn about the country.. i.e. some form of community service for bsc (& eng maybe) students post degree(maybe make it voluntary yr with gov paying a good salary and willing to pay 1yr varsity postgrad there after for 1yr served kind of bursary(its a knock on effect, they win as Sa gets more hon/msc etc people), we all know university fees is always an issue.. maybe pickup 2nd yr ++ students into this scheme too).

Now i know people are going to hate my guts for saying that but seriously if you want to fix this country, getting teachers who don't even know their subjects well, to teach is the issue. languages you can BS about with somewhat but not so much with science and maths.

I'm sure you're doing mounds of community service yourself, krycor. Have you ever done anything that entitles you to suggest that students should have to do community service?

You seem to be defending the ruling party in most of your posts. How's BEE treating you?

As usual Tim Gaul comes out lauding and grandstanding for his old folk to come back . The old flag at full mast , a braai outside and a few volk-war stories to set the mood with a few who can afford the khakiz . Whilst forgetting that Verwoed and his crew had designed a system to benefit a minority few .

Clearly you missed the part where the ANC has had 15 years to fix the system. Whilst forgetting that the ANC and their crew designed a system to benefit a minority few (cadres in the party).

There is none so blind as those that don't want to see. The ANC has completely bungled the education system, and it is only fools like you that would blame Apartheid rather than realise this country is headed down a slippery slope if we don't acknowledge our misgivings. Your attitude does more harm to this country than 400 years of Europeans could ever hope to achieve. I don't know why we even bothered to implement Apartheid, we should've put the ANC in charge in 1947 because they are far more adept at screwing over the local population than a handful Afrikaners ever were. If we really wanted to punish the blacks in this country we would've ended Apartheid much, much earlier.

I agree somewhat, but not so much the community service. We pay to study, so unless it's free or highly subsidized I refuse to do "community" service. Rather study in another country then.

Yours is a celebration of a past era when the black-child had no access to education . His education was based on the premise that he would work on the mines or some other manual labour job , were basically that was it . Maybe you every right to celebrate that past era and call for the removal of the new and return to the past . Back then you had after all surety of public education , an awaiting job and other packs just because your skin colour resembled that of the rulers .

well done ANC.

Certainly not much has changed, so does the celebration continue? Or is that just for high-level members of the ANC who are intent on keeping their population ignorant and working on the mines? Remember, the ANC knows an uneducated voter won't vote for anyone else.

Back then a minority had the surety of a public education, now no one does. Wow, its amazing, instead of pulling the entire country up, the ANC decided to push everyone down. You must be so proud!

The ANC has done more damage to the black citizens of this country than the National Party ever did. John Vorster would be proud of the way the ANC operates!

whahhahah whahah what rubbish . The ANC isnt doing a great job thats clear for everyone to see . The very aspect that you Tim can voice your opinion , Zille can form a political party , eugene can fall off his high horse is surety that Anc is doing a better job than your long gone heroes and heroines .

if they aren't doing a great job then why the hell do you vote for them? because you are a product of ANC education?

Your child might be the fastest sprinter in his class but not be the fastest in the whole grade . it means his class is not endowed with great sprinters.

In 2004 the pass rate was 70% now it is 60%. How is that a great job? Are you a product of this education system?

Wait a minute now sonny . Dont rush to attack . Read my opinions . Your freind timmy says Vorster`s days were way much better for black folk . thats my gripe .

the education system was better for everyone back then ??

let me explain

the education system for the blacks was ****
the education system for the whites was top class

now the education system for everyone is ****...

instead of lifting the black majority, they brought the white minority down to their rediculous low levels.......
